2.[3] Miami Beach, Florida June 8, 2016 June 18, 2016 Legislative statute On June 8, 2016, Miami Beach voted to ban conversion therapy. The ban was sponsored by Commissioner John Elizabeth Alemàn and was unanimously approved by the City Commission.[4][5] The ban took effect on June 18.
3.[6] Wilton Manors, Florida September 13, 2016 September 13, 2016 Legislative statute On September 13, 2016, the City Commission of Wilton Manors unanimously approved an ordinance banning conversion therapy. The ban took effect that same day.[7]
4.[8] Seattle, Washington August 1, 2016 October 2, 2016 Legislative statute On August 1, 2016, Seattle voted to ban conversion therapy on minors.[9][10] The ban was sponsored by Commissioner Lorena González and was unanimously approved by all other eight city commissioners. Mayor Ed Murray signed the ordinance on August 3 and it took effect on October 2.
5.[11] Miami, Florida October 13, 2016 October 13, 2016 Legislative statute On October 13, 2016, the Miami City Commission voted 3-2 in favor of banning the use of conversion therapy on minors.[12] The ban was sponsored by Commissioner Francis Suarez and took effect that same day.
6.[13] North Bay Village, Florida October 25, 2016 October 25, 2016 Legislative statute On October 25, 2016, North Bay Village voted to ban conversion therapy. The ban took effect immediately upon adoption.[13]

On August 28, 2012, the California State Assembly voted 52-22 in favor of SB-1172. On September 30, 2012, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB-1172 and was scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2013.[22] On December 21, 2012, in the case of Welch v. Brown, Judge William B. Shubb granted an preliminary injunction to SB-1172 from going into effect.[23] On August 29, 2013, in the case of Pickup v. Brown and Welch v. Brown, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld SB-1172 and reversed the lower court order granting a preliminary injunction.[24]

On December 22, 2014, Mayor Vincent C. Gray signed B20-0501. The act passed Congressional review and took effect on March 11, 2015.

5.[29]  Illinois August 20, 2015 January 1, 2016 Legislative statute On May 19, 2015, the Illinois House of Representatives voted 68-43 in favor of HB 217.[30] On May 29, 2015, the Illinois State Senate voted 34-19 in favor of the bill.[31] On August 20, 2015, Governor Bruce Rauner signed HB 217 and it went into effect on January 1, 2016.[32]
6.[33]  New York February 6, 2016 April 27, 2016 Executive regulation On February 6, 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a series of regulations to prevent the use of conversion therapy on LGBT minors.[34] The regulations went into effect on April 27.[35]
7.[36]  Vermont May 25, 2016 July 1, 2016 Legislative statute On March 17, 2016, the Vermont Senate unanimously approved S.132.[37][38] On April 26, the Vermont House of Representatives approved it with amendments. The Senate concurred in with the amendments on April 29.[39] Governor Peter Shumlin signed the bill on May 25. It went into effect on July 1.[40]
