Quebec is the second-most populous province in Canada with 7,903,001 residents as of 2011 and is the largest in land area at approximately 1,357,000 km² (524,000 sq mi).^[1] In 2011, Quebec's 1,111 municipalities covered 7001377000000000000♠37.7% of the province's land mass yet were home to 7001993000000000000♠99.3% of its population.^[2][3]

The Government of Quebec's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy recognizes seven types of municipalities – cities (cités), parishes (paroisses), municipalities (municipalités), towns (villes), townships (cantons), united townships (cantons unis) and villages (villages).^[2]

Of Quebec's 1,111 municipalities, 640 or 7001580000000000000♠58% of them are simply "municipalities". Of the remaining 471, there are 158 parishes, 223 towns, 44 townships, 2 united townships and 44 villages. Despite still being a legal municipal status, there are no longer any cities in Quebec.

In 2011, just over 7001210000000000000♠21% of Quebec's population resided in Montreal, its largest municipality. L'Île-Dorval is Quebec's smallest municipality by population with 5 people.^[3] The largest municipality by land area is Baie-James at 297,333 km² (114,801 sq mi), while the smallest by land area is Notre-Dame-des-Anges at 0.04 km² (0.015 sq mi).^[3]

Municipalities

Quebec has 640 municipalities (municipalités) that had a cumulative population of 1,009,205 and an average population of 1,157 in the 2011 Census.^[2][3] Quebec's largest and smallest municipalities are Sainte-Sophie and Lac-Tremblant-Nord with populations of 13,375 and 47 respectively.^[3]

Parishes

Quebec has 158 parishes (paroisses) that had a cumulative population of 168,557 and an average population of 1,067 in the 2011 Census.^[2][3] Quebec's largest and smallest parishes Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel and Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague-du-Cap-Tourmente with populations of 5,467 and 18 respectively.^[3]

Towns

Quebec has 223 towns (villes) that had a cumulative population of 6,574,637 and an average population of 29,483 in the 2011 Census.^[2][3] Quebec's largest and smallest towns are Montreal and L'Île-Dorval with populations of 1,649,519 and 5 respectively.^[3]

Townships

Quebec has 44 townships (cantons) that had a cumulative population of 44,611 and an average population of 1,014 in the 2011 Census.^[2][3] Quebec's largest and smallest townships are Shefford and Ristigouche-Partie-Sud-Est with populations of 6,711 and 167 respectively.^[3]

United townships

Quebec has two united townships (cantons unis). Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury had a population of 7,106 in the 2011 Census, while Latulipe-et-Gaboury had a population of 304.^[3]

Villages

Quebec has 44 villages that had a cumulative population of 43,875 and an average population of 997 in the 2011 Census.^[2][3] Quebec's largest village is Val-David with a population of 4,450, while Kingsbury is province's smallest village with a population of 123.^[3]
