List of historic monuments of 1840

In 1840, the French Commission for Historical Monuments (Commission des monuments historiques) published its first list designating French historic monuments, containing 934 entries.[1] The list focused primarily on those requiring conservation works, and consisted mostly of public monuments belonging to the state, a commune, or département. Monuments were nominated by the prefects of the departments.[2]
