Since the Vietnam War, most of Vietnamese aircraft were supplied by the Soviet Union and now by Russia, while hundreds were left over by the United States through South Vietnam, most of which are no longer in service either due to the inavailability of parts or the aircraft is already old.

To decrease its dependent on Russian weapons as the nation going towards modernisation, Vietnam has began to exploring American and European aircraft although facing numerous political, historical and financial barriers, especially due to its conflict in the South China Sea with former Communist-ally of China who similarly using many Soviet weapons.[1][2]
