List of Yona of the Dawn episodes

Yona of the Dawn is a 20142015 action, fantasy, romance anime adaptation. Produced by Pierrot and directed by Kazuhiro Yoneda, the anime aired between October 7, 2014 and March 24, 2015 on AT-X. Funimation has licensed the anime series for streaming and home video rights in North America. Beginning on March 17, 2015, Funimation streamed their dubbed version of the anime, starting with episode 13. The first opening theme is an instrumental song by Kunihiko Ryo, called Akatsuki no Yona (暁のヨナ, literally Yona of the Dawn), while the first ending theme is Yoru (, lit. meaning Night) by Vistlip. The second opening theme is "Akatsuki no Hana", by Cyntia,[1] and the second ending theme is "Akatsuki", by Akiko Shikata.[2]

Princess Yona is the only child of the ruler of Kouka Kingdom, Emperor IL. One week before her 16th birthday, Yona is determined to impress her older cousin, Soo-won, and make it clear to her father that she wants to be with him. However, IL does not approve, as he will ultimately be the one deciding who his successor will be. When Yona attempts to confess to Soo-won, he interrupts her. Yona's birthday party is held in the castle and Soo-won gives her a hairpin for a gift, and tells Yona (contrary to her beliefs) that her hair is like the colour of the sky at dawn. Yona decides to try to convince her father again, but upon arriving in his room, sees Soo-won stab her father. 
2 "Torn Bonds"

Soo-won tells the shocked Yona that Emperor Il was the one that killed his father, so he was taking revenge. The soldiers supporting him and Kye-Sook (Soo-won's adviser) enter and suggest killing Yona to silence her. But Hak interferes and saves her. He learns of Emperor IL's murder and he and Soo-won clash. Through the struggle and with the help of Emperor ll's right hand servant they manage to escape. 
3 "The Distant Sky"

Hak and Yona travel in the mountains to escape from the guards. Yona is dazed, unable to do even the simplest of tasks on her own. Hak finds Yona's hairpin and purposefully hides it, in hopes that Yona will forget the past. Despite Soo-won murdering her father, Yona still has residual feelings for him. She notices the hairpin is missing and wanders far from camp and into a snake pit. Getting bitten himself, Hak saves Yona, scolds her, and returns the hair pin. 
4 "The Wind Tribe"
"Kaze no Buzoku" (風の部族)

Hak brings Yona to his hometown, Capital Fuuga. Elder Mun-deok is absent, having been called to Hiryuu Castle. There, Soo-Won seeks approval from the five clan heads to become King of Kouka Kingdom. Mun-deok defers giving his support, as it would mean acknowledging Hak is a suspect, and returns to Fuuga. The fire clan cut off water to Fuuga as a warning. Lord Tae-jun, acting without orders, intercepts the merchants that coincidentally, would have brought the medicine that Hak's adoptive brother Tae-yeon, now desperately needs. Hak decides to leave Fuuga and dissociate himself from the tribe in order to protect the wind clan. Hak's final order as chief is for Mun-deok to accept Soo-Won as king, and to take Yona in, and let her live out her life as a villager. 
5 "Howl"
"Hōkō" (咆哮)

Heang-dea returns with medicine for Tae-yeon. Yona visits the injured merchants, who are being treated in the town, and resolves to not let the wind tribe get involved in the conflict. She humbly thanks Tae-yeon and chases after Hak, convincing him to take her with him. Mun-deok directs them to find a priest (神官 shinkan),[3] who is said to be able to foresee the future of the Kingdom of Kouka. As they are traveling, Yona and Hak are spotted heading toward the northern mountains, and Lord Tae-Jun sends his troops after them. Hak is shot by a poison arrow and leaves Yona in a hidden spot to go fight the soldiers alone. Yona knocks down an archer about to kill Hak and confronts Tae-Jun. 
6 "Red Hair"
"Akai Kami" (紅い髪)

Affected by the poison, Hak is driven off the edge of a cliff and hangs perilously by one arm. Yona runs towards him but is caught by the hair by Tae-Jun. She grabs Tae-Jun's sword and frees herself by cutting her hair. She tries to assist Hak by pulling him up, but instead falls into the valley below with Hak. Assuming them dead, Tae-Jun reports to Soo-won, giving him Yona's hair. The next day, Soo-Won is crowned king. Yona wakes up to meet Yun, who found and brought them to his hut, and Ik-su, the priest Yona and Hak were looking for. Hak, who protected Yona as they fell, is unconscious and badly injured. Yun, however, is treating him. 
7 "Fate"
"Tenmei" (天命)

Hak regains consciousness. Ik-su tells Yona her fate and refers to Kingdom Kouka's creation myth of the four dragons who bestowed their power upon four humans to protect King Hiryuu, who was the human embodiment of the red dragon. The five humans together represented the Kingdom's five clans, and after King Hiryuu's death, the four dragon warriors dispersed. Ik-su instructs Yona to find the four dragon warriors or else Hak would be on the path to death. Willing to acquire even God's help to protect Hak, Yona decides to follow the priest's advice, but doubts that the four dragon warriors will want to follow her in her current weak state. Because of this, she asks Hak to teach her how to use a bow and sword. 
8 "The Chosen Door"
"Eranda Tobira" (選んだ扉)

Ik-su asks Yona and Hak to take Yun with them, but Yun is reluctant, saying he hates royalty. Despite this, he makes new clothes for Yona and trims her hair. Seven years earlier Yun had been living alone in a village on the verge of starvation, and had attacked the wandering Ik-su after hearing he had been giving out gold pieces. Afterwards feeling guilty, he had treated Ik-su with medicine and Ik-su taught him how to make shoes out of straw. Eventually Yun, wanting to learn more and travel with Ik-su, left his home with Ik-su. In the present time, Yun decides to go with Yona and Hak, and he tearfully bids Ik-su farewell. 
9 "Shaking Resolve"
"Furueru Kakugo" (ふるえる覚悟)

Soo-won focuses on reforming the country. Yona, Hak and Yun head towards the location of one of the dragon warriors, who lives in a secret clan atop a mountain. After a narrow escape from some Fire Tribe guards, Yona asks Hak to teach her how to use the sword. Hak, however, teaches her how to use a bow instead. Training diligently as they travel, Yona struggles with her father's attitude about weapons. A group of archers ambush the three travelers, revealing they are guardians of the white dragon when they spot Yona's red hair. 
10 "Anticipation"
"Taibō" (待望)

Yona and Hak meet back up with Yun in the village. The white dragon warrior, Ki-ja, recognizes Yona as the master he's been waiting for and agrees to go with her. The village holds a banquet in their honor and the four leave together. Ki-ja informs Yona he has a special link with the other dragons and can identify those with the dragon power, even though he has never met them. 
11 "The Dragon's Claw"
"Ryū no Tsume" (龍の爪) 
December 16, 2014
The four head towards the closest dragon warrior that Ki-ja can sense, the blue dragon warrior. Ki-ja and Hak squabble with each other but gain some mutual respect when they encounter and defeat some bandits. Ki-ja is frustrated by his inability to accurately sense the location of the blue dragon warrior, but is encouraged by Yona. Eventually, Yun realizes the likely location of the blue dragon warrior. 
12 "Blindfolded Dragon"
"Mekakushi no Ryū" (目隠しの龍) 
December 23, 2014
The four arrive at the village - a network of caves in the mountain - but the villagers deny knowing about the blue dragon warrior. Yona gets separated from the group and is taken deeper into the caves by a villager, who secretly intends to harm her. She is rescued by the masked blue dragon warrior, but he runs away shortly after. As a child, he was feared by the villagers for the power of his eyes to paralyze those who see them. He was taught and raised by the previous blue dragon warrior, who slowly went blind until he died, leaving the child alone. 
13 "Echoing Fear"
"Hankyō Suru Kyōfu" (反響する恐怖)

The blue dragon warrior, who experienced a voice telling him to protect Hiryuu when he touched Yona, while recognizing Ki-Ja as the white dragon, is dazed and escapes into the caves. Yona and Yun enter the caves, leaving Hak and Ki-Ja behind to deal with the villagers. They find the agitated blue dragon warrior, and Yona calmly asks him to be her ally. The blue dragon warrior tells her to leave, and they return to Ki-Ja who is holding back the hostile villagers. An earthquake traps the villagers with Yona, Ki-Ja and Yun. A villager explains the curse, until the blue dragon warrior enters. Out of fear, the villager strikes the blue dragon warrior, knocking off his mask. 
14 "Light"

The blue dragon warrior retrieves his mask and begins digging a path out of the cave. The others join him and Hak starts digging from the outside. Hak finally breaks through and reunites with Yona. Yona again asks the blue dragon warrior to travel with them and he accepts. They set off, but Ki-Ja collapses from exhaustion so they stop to make camp. Yona gives the name "Shin-Ah" (シンア Shin'a), which she says means moonlight, to the blue dragon warrior. When they awake the next morning, Ki-Ja tells Yona he can sense the green dragon warrior. 
15 "To a New Land"
"Aratana Chi e" (新たな地へ)

The five search for the green dragon warrior using Shin-Ah's farsightedness to scout ahead. They encounter a dilapidated village and a sickly man who criticizes the late King Il. Meanwhile, Su-won visits Chishin, the capital of the Earth Clan, and meets with Lord I Geun-tae (voiced by Masaki Aizawa), who is not impressed by Su-won. Su-won declares they will hold a war-game festival at Chishin in a week. 
16 "War Games"
"Ikusa Gokko" (戦ごっこ)

The war game is held. The participants are divided into teams with Su-won and General Geun-tea leading the white and red teams respectively. The objective: to score the most points by breaking the plates of the other team. Su-won's strategies and hidden ferocity impress Geun-tea, whose team manages to win more points than the white team despite all their plates being broken. Su-won leaves the city with his cohorts, having stimulated demand for Geun-tea's wife's tea in a neighboring land, re-invigorated production in the earth tribe's mines, and inspired the earth tribe's people anew of their leader's strength. 
17 "The Pirates of Awa"

Yona and her companions reach Awa Port. Hak enters the city alone and without realizing it, meets the green dragon warrior, Jae-ha. Jae-ha moved to the city thirteen years ago and joined a band of good pirates led by Captain Gigan. With the help of Jae-ha's jumping power, they sink the drug-carrying boats which belonged to the lord of the region, Yan Kumji. Jae-ha senses that the white and blue dragons have come to the city. As he wishes to avoid his destiny, he quickly disappears whenever they are near. When a citizen was harassed by corrupt officials, both he and Hak help. After meeting Hak, Jae-ha decides to recruit him. 
18 "Ties"

Yona and her companions continue their search for the green dragon warrior, encountering more corrupt officials. As Jae-ha pursues Hak, he unwillingly meets Ki-ja. Jae-Ha refuses to join them and flees again, soon-after finding Hak. While persuading Hak to join the pirates, he meets Yona and discovers that she is the master of the four dragons. He turns down Yona's invitation to accompany her on her journey. Yona, while gracefully accepting his choice, is however determined to help the town and asks to meet the Pirate captain. Jae-ha brings them to Captain Gigan, who approves of Hak and the other two dragon warriors' fighting ability. Yun, while lacking fighting ability, speaks of his other skills. Yona cannot think of any skills she possesses, but impresses the captain with her resolve. The captain decides to give her a life-threatening task to prove herself. 
19 "The Senjuso Test"
"Senjusō no Tameshi" (千樹草の試し)

Captain Gigan's task is for Yona to go by herself to collect some senjuso, a valuable herb found only on the Mist-Shrouded Cape, a sheer, sea-facing cliff. Despite her fear, Yona continues, with Jae-ha following until the path becomes too narrow. She reaches the cave where the senjuso grows, and reemerges, only to be swept away by a sudden large wave, and is left hanging from a thorny branch. Jae-ha jumps to the rescue, but Yona refuses his help, saying her promise to the captain would be broken. Another wave sweeps up the rock and Jae-ha saves Yona. They return and Yona admits to Captain Gigan that she had help from Jae-ha. Yona insists on going back to pick the plant again, with no help. Captain Gigan laughs it off, saying that Yona is worthy enough to join the pirates. Shin-Ah spots ships with armed men on the horizon. The captain explains that Kumji has an important deal with a group from the Kai empire who deal in human trafficking. 
20 "Chain of Courage"
"yuki no rensa" (勇気の連鎖)

Captain Gigan discusses the plan to stop Yan Kumji, and the danger of Kumji using the slaves as hostages. The problem being that they won't know which ship the woman and children will be on. The following day, Jae-ha invites Yona to scout the town with him. They meet a woman whose friend was kidnapped in a shop belonging to Yan Kumji. They return to the pirate's hideout and Yona volunteers to infiltrate the shop, in order to signal with fireworks which ship the hostages will be on. Captain Gigan agrees, with the condition that she goes with Yun. 
21 "Spark"
"Hibana" (火花)

Yona and Yun successfully infiltrate Yan Kumji's human trafficking, Yona spraining her ankle. Kumji himself visits the captured women, and chooses Yona for himself. Kumji suspects that she is the princess, but Yona manages to allay his fears and Kumji leaves. Yona is able to place hope in the hearts of the other captured women and makes a acquaintance named Yuri. Meanwhile, the Captain's ships engage in battle. With the help of Yuri, Yona and Yun barely escape the enemies grasp and Yona is able to light the fireworks, giving the signal to Shin-ah. 
22 "The Night History Was Made"
"Rekishi wa Yoru Tsukurareru" (歴史は夜作られる)

Yona and Yun are rescued by Jae-ha and Shin-ah. Kumji's forces are near defeated, and he attempts to flee in a row boat. Shin-ah spots him, and Jae-ha jumps towards the boat but Kumji shoots him down with bow and arrow. He is about to finish Jae-ha off when he is suddenly struck with fear. Yona on the boats, filled with bloodlust, shoots him in the chest and he falls into the sea. Just then, dawn breaks. The pirates and women return to town to celebrate. Yona wanders alone in the town, and bumps into Su-won. 
23 "Morning of Promise"
"Chikai no Asa" (誓いの朝)

Su-won tells Yona that he is in Awa to investigate Yan Kumji. Su-won's guards approach, Su-won conceals Yona underneath his cloak and tells them that the matter with Kumji is taken care of. Yona attempts to draw Su-won's sword, but he gently stops her. After his guards leave, he tells her that while he understands that she wants to kill him, he cannot die yet and he leaves to return to Hiryuu-castle. Yona, who hadn't spoken a word, falls to her knees and cries. Hak hears her and runs to her. After the encounter, Yona pretends she is fine although visibly shaken to Hak. Yona and her companions leave Awa, and Jae-ha says that he will join them. 
24 "From Now On"
"Korekara" (これから) 
March 24, 2015
Soon after Yona and her companions mention searching for the yellow dragon warrior, he shows up at their campsite, drawn by the smell of food. Jae-ha, Shin-ah and Ki-ja recognise the yellow dragon warrior, who casually greets them. He refers to himself as Zeno and agrees to join Yona's group for the food, although he didn't feel any awakening when he met her. Zeno claims he has a tough body, although he doesn't appear to have any power. Ki-ja is disappointed, but Yona trusts that he is the yellow-dragon. Yun brings them all to the priest, Iksu, and asks him what the sword and shield from the legend are. Iksu tells them they will know it when it happens. Zeno asks Yona what she wants to do with the four dragons. Yona admits to Ik-su that she still loves Su-won and Hak overhears her. Hak finds Yona practicing with a sword, and they take shelter from the rain in a cave. Meanwhile, Elder Mun-deok brings his new protégé to Hiryuu castle, where Su-won is still working on fixing the kingdom. Yona and her companions watch soldiers travelling through Kouka Kingdom.
