List of The X Factor finalists (Australia season 1)

The first season of The X Factor Australia was broadcast on Network Ten.[1] It premiered on 6 February 2005 and ended on 15 May 2005.[1][2] Each category was mentored by one of the show's three judges Mark Holden, Kate Ceberano and John Reid.[2] Holden mentored the Groups, Ceberano was given the 16-24s and Reid had the Over 25s.[2] Random were declared the winners, with Holden emerging as the winning mentor.[2]

16-24s

Jacob Butler

Jacob Butler was a 22-year-old contestant from Mount Gambier, South Australia, who was dubbed the "Rock kid" of The X Factor. He left the show voluntarily after he and Harder were in the bottom two. Butler later became a contestant on the fifth season of Australian Idol and progressed through to the top 12. He placed eighth in the competition. Since Idol, Jacob has released his debut record "Reason" in Germany and other countries across Europe. The album was released in Australia and New Zealand in August 2013.

Vincent Harder

Vince Harder was a 22-year-old contestant from Bondi, New South Wales, who placed third in the competition.

Gemma Purdy

Gemma Purdy was a 16-year-old contestant from Nunawading, Victoria.

Over 25s

Russell Gooley

Russell Gooley was a 27-year-old contestant from Narrogin, Western Australia. He was the runner-up of the season. He was born in New Zealand.[2]

Roslynn Mahe

Roslynn Mahe was a 30-year-old contestant from Granville, New South Wales.

Janie Shrapnel

Janie Shrapnel was a 47-year-old contestant from Samford, Queensland.

Groups

The Brothership

The Brothership was a group, which consisted of the three Philippou brothers from South Australia, George (aged 33), Adam (aged 30) and Michael (aged 29). They went through many different names during The X Factor, including 49 Sheriff, Phillipo and The Phillipo Brothers, until they settled on The Brothership. The three brothers had previously recorded under the name of Universal.

Kaya

Kaya was a group, which consisted of Alexandra "Alexi" Kaye (aged 29) from Bondi Junction, New South Wales, Juleiaah Boehm (aged 23) from Camperdown, New South Wales, Sally Stevens (aged 25) from Bondi, New South Wales, and Emma Deans (aged 22) from Balmain, New South Wales.

Random

Random was an R&B vocal group from Queensland, which consisted of Xylocaine "XY" Latu (born 13 January 1979 in Tonga) from Logan Central, Andy-Iese "Jesse" Tolo-Paepae (born 19 January 1984 in Australia) from Kingston, Wayne Tauvao (born 12 December 1985 in New Zealand) from Kippa-Ring, Tasesa Junior "TJ" Tauvao (born 31 May 1988 in New Zealand) from Kippa-Ring, and Donald Tauvao (born 12 October 1988 in Western Samoa) from Redcliffe. Random were announced the winners of the season on 15 May 2005 and received a recording contract with Sony Music Australia.[2]
