List of The Big C episodes

The Big C is a Showtime original series created by Darlene Hunt and starring Laura Linney. She plays a reserved, fortysomething, suburban wife and mother whose recent cancer diagnosis forces her to shake up her life and find hope, humor and the light side of a dark situation, while managing her immature but well-meaning husband, played by Oliver Platt.

A total of 40 episodes of The Big C were aired over four seasons, between August 16, 2010 and May 20, 2013.

Series overview

The runtime was 27-minutes for seasons 1 through 3, and one-hour for season 4. In syndication, season 4 was recut into half-hour episodes (identified as part 1 and part 2).

Cathy reveals her cancer to Rebecca, who tells Sean in an effort to be close to him. Sean is hurt and angry with Cathy for keeping her cancer a secret. Meanwhile, Adam has been seeing a shrink but simply wishes to be with his friends. Cathy and Paul then seek out the help of Dr. Atticus Sherman, whom they are told has had success curing people with Cathy's advanced stage of cancer.

Paul then learns that despite Myk's declarations of love he is really marrying Andrea for a green card. Adam discovers Poppy has been lying to him about who she is, ending their friendship. Lee calls Cathy to come see him. Upon their reunion he soon dies, devastating Cathy and causing her family to miss their flight. Paul exposes Myk to Andrea who then turns him into the INS. Sean then returns home.

Cathy decides to run, in Lee's memory, the marathon he had been planning to do. Paul fights with his health insurance provider over a scan for Cathy after quitting work, due to a random drug test. His addiction is exposed. Dr. Todd is revealed to have moved on from his ex-girlfriend and feelings for Cathy. Sean makes up for lost time. Adam and Mia rekindle their relationship after it is revealed he has been sincerely apologizing to her for the way he acted. As Cathy approaches the finish line of her marathon she sees her friends and family (including Marlene and Lee) standing waiting for her; then Adam remarks how Paul isn't yet there. Cathy collapses and begins to sob as she sees Paul's spirit standing with Lee and Marlene. Paul is then shown to have suffered a heart attack, with paramedics racing to revive him.

Three weeks after the previous season finale, Paul is revealed to have survived his heart attack and the near death experience has pushed him and Cathy to ask Sean to be Adam's guardian in the event of their deaths. Andrea, having returned from visiting her parents, has developed a strong sense of black identity. Cathy's treatments continue to work, but seeing that Paul could have died she has decided to "live life on the edge" once again and has become a patron at the Naked Turtle Pub, where she smokes, drinks, goes by the name Alexis, and flirts with the bartender.

Cathy decides to stop chemotherapy treatment, knowing she will die regardless and has Adam open all the presents she bought for his future birthdays. Andrea has trouble in college.

Cathy decides to go live at a hospice, which upsets the whole family. Sean debates his organ donation options, while Andrea designs a dress for Cathy to wear at her funeral. Paul and Adam continue to bicker as they realize Cathy will not be around much longer. Cathy leaves hospice for an evening to model Andrea's dress on a fashion runway. Cathy is visited by Dr. Sherman, who is later revealed to have died a week earlier from colon cancer.

Cathy's four months of insurance coverage expires and she leaves the hospice to return home. She doesn't want to die at home and asks Sean to kill her. Sean learns his kidney is going to a wealthy man who is grateful and tries to give him a Rolex. This blatant materialism offends Sean, although he decides to go through with the kidney donation. Andrea believes Cathy will beat her cancer, and almost misses out on an internship in New York with Isaac Mizrahi. Paul brings Cathy's father (Brian Dennehy) to see her so that she can make amends. Adam seems distant and is revealed to have been taking extra courses to graduate a year early, allowing Cathy to see him get his high school diploma. Paul goes off to buy Cathy the flowers she wanted as her wedding flowers, but arrives home only to find she has died. Her therapist is revealed to have been a higher being and during the closing credits Cathy is seen floating in a swimming pool with Marlene and Thomas.
