List of Naruto chapters (Part II, volumes 49–72)

The Naruto manga series, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, is split in two parts to divide the storyline; the second part is simply known as Part II.[1][2] The plot follows the return of the ninja Naruto Uzumaki to Konohagakure, after two and a half years of training after leaving his teammates Sakura Haruno and Kakashi Hatake, and his subsequent efforts to make his best friend, Sasuke Uchiha, return with him and his friends. However, the criminal organization Akatsuki begins to hunt Naruto to get the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox that is sealed within him.

Part II starts at chapter 245 and is set two and a half years after the conclusion of chapter 238 in Part I. Chapters 239 through 244 form a gaiden set before the Naruto manga and detail part of Kakashi Hatake's history. All subsequent chapters are considered part of the Part II storyline. Naruto was published in individual chapters by Shueisha in Weekly Shōnen Jump and later collected in tankōbon format with various extras. While the series started serialization in issue 43 of 1999, Part II started in issue 19 of 2005.[1] Volume 49 was released on January 4, 2010, and the latest and final volume is 72, released on February 4, 2015.[3][4]

An anime adaptation of Part II, produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo, premiered on February 15, 2007, on TV Tokyo under the name Naruto Shippuden (NARUTO -ナルト- 疾風伝 Naruto Shippūden, literally, Naruto: Hurricane Chronicles). These episodes began to air immediately after the end of the original Naruto anime, which had been showing filler episodes in order to widen the plot gap between the anime and the manga.[5]

The English serialization of the Naruto manga is licensed by Viz Media and is currently published simultaneously in North America in the Weekly Shonen Jump digital magazine.[6] It was originally serialized in the now-defunct monthly Shonen Jump print magazine. English language trade volumes are published both in print and digitally through Viz Media's Viz Manga website. To compensate for occasional gaps between the Japanese and English adaptations of the manga, Viz Media has periodically announced special campaigns during which they release several volumes within a relatively short period of time.[2][7] Volume 49 was released in English by Viz Media on October 5, 2010, and the final volume 72 was released on October 6, 2015.[8][9]

Though Naruto says they will both die when that happens, Sasuke promises to be stronger than Naruto by then. They go their separate ways, Sasuke joining Madara, and Naruto returning to Konoha with Sakura and Kakashi, taking Karin prisoner. The warring factions prepare for the future and Tsunade, having awakened from her coma, reluctantly agrees with the other Kage to send an oblivious Naruto and Bee into hiding on Bee's private island to keep them safe from Akatsuki. When they meet there, Naruto asks Bee to tame the Nine-Tails (as Bee has tamed his Eight-Tails), but Bee can do nothing for him until he overcomes the evil in his heart resulting from a life of loneliness.

The fox's strength and corrupting qualities are too much for him and he is almost beaten, but the spirit of Kushina Uzumaki intervenes, stopping the fox, and, by revealing herself to be Naruto's mother, gives him the resolve to contain the fox on his own. After revealing how she and Minato fell in love, Kushina then tells Naruto how the demon fox was originally sealed in her, how Madara Uchiha used the fox to attack Konoha, and how Kushina and Minato, believing Naruto would someday be the one to defeat Madara, gave their lives to seal the fox's power into him. Although Kushina feels guilty about what Naruto has been through, he does not blame her, allowing her to pass on with no regrets.

Both Sasuke and Itachi remain on the defensive until the latter activates a forbidden technique that traps Kabuto's mind in a loop where the fight against the Uchiha never ends. Sharing the objective of a world without war, Hashirama and Madara became friends. However, both were found by their relatives and became enemies in the war as the heads of their clans.
