The episodes of the fourth season of the anime series Naruto: Shippuden are directed by Hayato Date, and produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo. They are based on Part II for Masashi Kishimoto's manga series. The season follows the criminal organization, the Akatsuki searching for the hosts of the tailed-beasts and encountering with the Leaf Ninja. The season was broadcast on TV Tokyo in Japan, between August 21 and December 11, 2008.[1] The season was later released on four DVDs in Japan by Aniplex between January 14 and May 13, 2009.[2] The season was referred to by these DVDs as the chapter of Immortal Devastators — Hidan and Kakuzu (不死の破壊者、飛段・角都 Fushi no Hakaisha Hidan Kakuzu).[3]

On January 2, 2009 Viz Media and Crunchyroll began providing subtitled Naruto: Shippuden episodes.[4] The English dub aired on Disney XD between March 16 and July 23, 2011.[5] Viz Media released the season in two DVD boxes on April 26, 2011 and July 12, 2011.[6][7] Manga Entertainment also collected it in two DVD boxes with the first one released on July 11, 2011 and the second set to November 7, 2011.[8][9]

The opening themes for this season were "Blue Bird" (ブルーバード, Burūbādo) by Ikimono-gakari to episode 77, and "Closer" by Joe Inoue from episode 78 onward, and the ending themes were "Broken Youth" by NICO Touches the Walls to episode 77, and "Long Kiss Good Bye" by Halcali from episode 78 onward. The second feature movie, Naruto Shippūden 2: Bonds, which is based on the Naruto: Shippuden series, was released on August 2, 2008. The broadcast versions of episodes 70-73 include scenes from the movie in the opening themes, while still retaining the original music.

As Asuma visits the grave of Hiruzen and Naruto continues training, Kakashi informs Tsunade that the Akatsuki are on the move. Hidan and Kakuzu capture Yugito Nii from the Village Hidden in the Clouds and extract Matatabi, before heading to the Land of Fire.

Infiltrating the Fire Temple, Hidan kills Chiriku. Later, Hidan and Kakuzu set out to collect the bounty on Chiriku before resuming their mission. On the next step of his training, Naruto begins to use chakra and cut the flow of the waterfall.

As Naruto advances to the second stage of wind chakra, Tsunade sends and splits twenty ninjas into four groups to deal with Hidan and Kakuzu, including Shikamaru, Asuma, Izumo, Kotetsu, Ino, Choji, Raido and Aoba. That night after seeing a shooting star, Naruto clears the second stage of training and rests.

As Asuma's group visits the Fire Temple, they pursue Hidan and Kakuzu. Naruto, Kakashi and Yamato converse each other, before Kakashi tells Naruto for the final training about completing the Rasengan.

Kakashi informs Naruto that the Rasengan only uses wind chakra, just as the Fourth Hokage created. Naruto resists the Nine-Tails' chakra and Yamato seals it again. At the bounty station, Hidan and Kakuzu gives Chiriku to Zangei in exchange for money, before Asuma's team arrive. 
77 "Climbing Silver"

The group confronts Hidan, who cuts Asuma on the cheek with his scythe, drinks his blood and draws the circle on the ground. Asuma uses Burning Ash Jutsu to attack Hidan. 
78 "The Judgment"

Surviving the attack, Hidan tells Asuma the ritual can link between himself and Asuma. Hidan stabs himself on the leg to make Asuma suffer his injury. As Shikamaru's Shadow Possession Jutsu forces Hidan to step out of the circle, Asuma seemingly beheads Hidan.

As Kakuzu sews Hidan's head back to his body with sprouting threads, Hidan returns to the circle, continues to injure himself to complete the ritual and kill Asuma.

As Hidan and Kakuzu flee, Asuma dies from his injuries, with his team mourning for him and Shikamaru keeps the lighter.

The villagers attend the funeral for Asuma, except Shikamaru staying at home with his parents. After visting Asuma's grave, Shikamaru, Ino and Choji plan their strategy to defeat Hidan and Kakuzu while leaving the village, before Kakashi volunteers as their replacement leader under Tsunade's supervision.

Tsunade tells Sakura that Kakashi is with Team 10, while Naruto finishes his training for a day. As the Akatsuki successfully extract Matatabi to the Gedo Statue, Kakashi and Team 10 confront Hidan and Kakuzu. Shikamaru's Shadow Possession Jutsu forces Hidan to attack Kakuzu, who sees Choji from above.

As Choji fails to attack Kakuzu, Sakura and Yamato teach Naruto about five elemental chakra natures between strength and weakness. Kakuzu evades Kakashi's Lightning Blade and produces four masked entities from his back, which consists Wind, Lightning and Fire.

After sensing Kakuzu's five hearts, Shikamaru uses Shadow Possession Jutsu to lead Hidan into a dense forest and separate from Kakuzu, who combines two of his hearts into a single entity for replacement. As Shikamaru puts some explosive tags, Hidan takes Shikamaru's blood with the spear, drinks it and nearly executes Shikamaru.

Shikamaru avenges Asuma's death while watching Hidan in the hole, before Sakura and Sai arrive. Naruto manages to defeat Kakuzu with the Rasen Shuriken by destroying all replaced hearts.
