A One Day International (ODI) is an international cricket match between two teams, each having ODI status, as determined by the International Cricket Council. The women's variant of the game is similar to the men's version, with minor modifications to umpiring and pitch requirements.[1] The first women's ODI was played in 1973, between England and Australia.[2] The Indian women's team played their first ODI match in 1978, against England,[3] after the Women's Cricket Association of India was formed.[4] The Women's Cricket Association of India was merged with the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2006 as part of the International Cricket Council's initiative to develop women's cricket.[5]

The Indian team is selected by a panel of former cricketers who have played at least 25 games at the first-class level or higher.[6] The panel consists of five retired women cricketers, the chairperson and four other members, one member from each of the five zonal divisions in domestic cricket.[7] More than 20% of India's women cricketers represent Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in the domestic league.[8] India have played 173 ODIs under 12 captains, starting with their first ODI in 1978 and including their most recent one in March 2009. The team first won an ODI in McLean Park, Napier, New Zealand against the International XI Women, their seventh game, played in 1982. Since then, India have won another 89 games.[9][10] The team's first series win was against New Zealand, in 1995.[11]

Former captain Mithali Raj is India's all-time leading run scorer, and ranks among the top ten players from all countries, along with Anjum Chopra; Raj (3836 runs) and Chopra (2777 runs) are ranked fifth and ninth, respectively.[12] Neetu David, with 141 wickets, is India's leading wicket taker and is placed second in the all-time leading wicket takers list from all countries; current captain Jhulan Goswami is third on the list with 120 wickets, and Nooshin Al Khadeer is sixth with 99 wickets.[13] Anju Jain with 81 dismissals and Karu Jain with 51 dismissals are fourth and fifth in terms of all-time dismissals by wicket-keepers from all countries.[14] Among captains, with 33 victories, Mithali Raj is India's most successful, and the third most successful captain in women's ODI cricket.[15]

Since the team was formed, 93 women have represented India in ODI cricket.[N 1] This list includes all players who have played at least one ODI match and is arranged in the order of debut appearance. Where more than one player won their first cap in the same match, those players are listed alphabetically by last name at the time of debut.
