As the inmates rehearse for a fashion show, an inmate named Carol almost dies in her cell after suffering a miscarriage. Wing Governor Helen Stewart is determined to find out what happened to Carol but is surprised at the lack of support from her fellow officers. Helen clashes with difficult prisoner Nikki Wade, causing the fashion show to get cancelled. Later, they form a shaky alliance and reinstate the fashion show after Helen persuades Nikki to help. An unhygienic inmate returns and upsets everyone with her nasty habits, while Jim Fenner plays dangerous games with Shell Dockley and Rachel Hicks.

Helen takes a tough stance on drugs and attempts to stop the results of drug tests being fixed by the other officers. New inmate Monica Lindsey is in for a complete culture shock but quickly proves that she's no pushover. Zandra Plackett, an old inmate, returns to the wrath of Shell and Denny Blood to whom she owes drugs. Shell torments Rachel, who continues to trust Fenner despite Nikki's warnings about him. Shell takes advantage of the crack down on drugs and accuses Nikki of smuggling drugs into the prison, causing her to be unfairly strip-searched by the DST (Dedicated Search Team). Helen is angry about this, but begins to doubt the way she was handling the drug problem.

Fenner takes advantage of his authority and begins to regret it when Shell gets violent with Rachel. Zandra is heartbroken when she is dumped by her fiancé, while she is organizing her wedding. New inmate, Crystal Gordon, arrives and annoys everybody with her bigoted views. Rachel continues to ignore Nikki's warnings.

Rachel breaks down when Shell and Denny make death threats if she fails to bring them a package when her mother visits. Rachel's mother suspects the package is illegal and refuses to bring it, later revealing she has put Rachel's daughter into care. Fenner doesn't help matters by rebuffing her when she asks for help. Zandra escapes from the abortion clinic to visit her ex, causing trouble for her escorting officers Lorna Rose and Dominic McAllister. Monica fears for Nikki's well-being when her girlfriend of 9 years, Trish, leaves her for another woman. Everything becomes too much for Rachel, who hangs herself in her cell during the night.

Dominic becomes disheartened with the prison service following Rachel's death and decides to hand in his notice. Shell and Denny plot with Fenner to ensure their part in Rachel's death isn't discovered and punished. Nikki and Shell finally come to blows after Shell makes light of Rachel's death. Zandra seeks medical help for trauma as it was she who found Rachel's body, but has no luck due to her history of drug abuse, so she attempts to blackmail Dominic and Lorna into helping her. Helen investigates Rachel's death as a promise to Mrs Hicks and finds all the evidence points to a cover-up involving Principal Officer Fenner. Denny assists by informing her of Rachel and Fenner's affair, which Nikki later confirms. Nikki also struggles to come to terms with her growing feelings for Helen, who is oblivious.

Nikki and the Julies save Monica, who is due in court for her appeal, from a suicide bid. Yvonne becomes popular amongst the inmates. Shell spills the beans about her affair with Fenner - to his wife.

New officer Karen Betts starts at Larkhall, revealing that she and Fenner have a history. Helen is torn between duty and desire as she battles to hide her true feelings from Nikki, but she has no option but to transfer her to another prison after she slaps prison officer Dominic McAllister. Fenner discovers Shell's deceit and his anger knows no bounds when his wife, Marilyn, declares their marriage over. Nikki is returned to Larkhall as Helen learns the truth about what happened, but quits her job as Wing Governor after an argument with Stubberfield. Helen visits Nikki in her cell to let her know she is leaving, and the pair share a kiss.

Julie J discovers that her children are back in England but Sylvia Hollamby spoils the reunion party, but the inmates make sure Sylvia pays the penalty for doing so. Denny gets the chance to visit her mum on the outside and her dreams for their future are shattered and Yvonne is left to comfort her. Sylvia helps Fenner clear his name and he returns to G-Wing with Shell thinking they will get back together, but for now it's no more Mr. Nice Guy. Yvonne and Fenner make a deal.

"Mad" Tessa Spall, a nightmare from the past, returns to haunt Karen, and only Fenner can save her. New inmate Barbara "Babs" Hunt goes through hell in a case of mistaken identity. Group therapy sessions start, which uncovers dark secrets for Shell. Zandra complains of headaches and collapses, with only Crystal believing it is not drug related. Yvonne keeps up her end of the bargain, but does Fenner?

Renee attacks Yvonne in the bathroom but Nikki saves Yvonne before she does any real damage. Shaz and Denny continue to cause havoc on the wing. Fenner's wife frees him to pursue Karen. Helen and Dominic meet up for a drink.

Shell is returned to G-Wing but is confined to her cell. Julie S is out of prison on a tag and meets her old flame, Trevor. Crystal is on hunger strike to protest against her incorrect drugs test results and it seems that only new girl Charlotte can save her. Di begins to abuse her mother when Josh confronts her about her deceit. Di then schemes to stop Josh and Crystal's wedding in a small ceremony in the prison chapel. Also, a new group of girls arrive, calling themselves the Peckham Boot Gang.

Plus, the Peckham Boot Gang reveals their plan to get rid of Yvonne, after Yvonne batters Al.

Yvonne exposes the deal between Fenner and Virginia. Fenner decides to strike back - and Babs' diary gives him all the leverage he needs, but this could mean trouble for Nikki. Al and Maxi get annoyed when Tina breaks away from the gang and continues to be friends with Virginia.

Fenner proposes to Karen and gets cosy with Maxi. The Peckham Boot Gang make up with Virginia but all is not what it seems. Fenner's campaign against Helen hots up and Nikki's appeal gives him the ideal outlet for his schemes. Crystal announces a miracle, but even the divine cannot help Yvonne who is accused of murder.

Denny arrives back on G-Wing, with two new inmates, Cassie Tyler and Roisin Connor. But Denny undergoes a makeover to get close to Al, just to help Yvonne catch Virginia's murderer. Barry turns very nasty when the women interfere with his relationship with Di again but this time Di will not back him up.

Roisin finds it hard to deal with prison life, but Cassie is living the life. Neil sets his sights on Fenner. Buki muscles in on Shaz and Denny's escape plan but she is left in the tunnel and it later collapses on her.

Shaz and Denny fall out but Maxi is there to help Shaz, but she really wants to frame Shaz for Virginia's murder.

Yvonne and Maxi come to blows resulting in drastic consequences. G-Wing's tiniest inmate arrives when Crystal gives birth to baby Zandra on the floor of her cell. Buki wants to be on the MBU with Crystal and Zandra but when a baby goes missing, Buki reveals the truth, as to why she wants to be with babies, to Mark. Karen goes to see Fenner and he gets heavy with her.

Karen struggles to cope following Fenner's assault on her but realises that involving the police will be futile when the whole story comes out. On a day out, Crystal makes a desperate bid to get Zandra away from Larkhall. Buki grows closer to Baxter but his illness claims his life.

Fenner is back in uniform and Neil is in dire need of a new governor. Karen turns down the job which means that there is only one candidate left - Sylvia. Emotions flare following Baxter's funeral. Yvonne is delighted when her estranged son visits her. Plus, Babs and Henry grow closer, but Henry grasses on the women.

The departure of Shaz has left a vacant cell on G-Wing, though it is immediately filled by a mystery American blonde, Snowball Merriman, who catches Fenner's eye. But Yvonne recognises her as does Karen recognise Yvonne's son. Denny spends her birthday down the block when she attacks Sylvia, upon discovering Shaz is gone. Fenner is in seventh heaven as he and Di tie the knot, but when he sees Neil and Karen entering the church clutching a big envelope, he goes cold with panic. Is this the end of the road for him?
