Life is an upcoming American science fiction thriller film directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Olga Dihovichnaya, Ariyon Bakare, Hiroyuki Sanada and Ryan Reynolds. It is scheduled to be released on May 26, 2017 by Columbia Pictures.

Synopsis

The six-member crew of the International Space Station is tasked with studying a sample from Mars that may be the first proof of extra-terrestrial life, but which proves to be more intelligent than expected.

Production

On November 18, 2015, Deadline reported that Daniel Espinosa would direct a space film Life from a script from Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, which Skydance Media would finance and produce with David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, along with Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn.[1] Paramount Pictures was circling to handle the distribution rights to the film, while the deal was not confirmed.[1] On January 28, 2016, Rebecca Ferguson came on board to star in the science fiction film,[2] and following her, Ryan Reynolds also joined the film on February 16, 2016, to play the lead role.[3] On March 10, 2016, Jake Gyllenhaal was cast in the film.[4] On March 15, 2016, Sony Pictures signed on to handle the worldwide distribution rights and to co-finance the film along Skydance.[5] On June 23, 2016, Hiroyuki Sanada was cast in the film to play one of the members of the International Space Station crew.[6] On July 19, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Olga Dihovichnaya and Ariyon Bakare were cast in the film to play members of the crew of the International Space Station.[7]

Principal photography on the film began on July 19, 2016 at London's Shepperton Studios.[7]

Release

Life will be released on May 26, 2017. It was originally scheduled for March 12, 2017, but it was delayed to avoid the box office competition with King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Power Rangers.
