Lee Hye-ri (born June 9, 1994), better known mononymously as Hyeri, is a South Korean singer and actress. She is the youngest member of girl group Girl's Day under Dream Tea Entertainment and is known for her leading roles in television dramas Reply 1988 (2015) and Entertainer (2016).

Early life and education

Hyeri was born on June 9, 1994, in Gwangju, South Korea. She has a sister, Hye-rim, who is 2 years younger.

When she was in middle school, Hyeri was scouted by Dream Tea Entertainment and consequently joined Girl's Day. She later attended Seoul School of Performing Arts,[2] and is currently majoring in Film at Konkuk University.

Career

2010–present: As idol singer

Main article: Girl's Day

In September 2010, Hyeri was announced as a new member of Girl's Day alongside Yura when Jiin and Jisun left the group, just two months after the group debuted.[3]

2012–present: Solo activities and rising popularity

In 2012, Hyeri was cast in the SBS weekend drama Tasty Life. In the show, Hyeri played the youngest in a family of four daughters.[4]

After her 4-day long appearance on Real Men in August 2014, a brief clip of her showing aegyo at her instructor went viral in South Korea; the clip had one million views in only three days.[5]

Hyeri later starred as one of the main characters in Seonam Girls High School Investigators, which began airing on cable channel jTBC in December 2014. She played a looks-obsessed member of a detective club.[6] In late 2014 she was cast in the drama Hyde, Jekyll, Me, which began airing on SBS in January 2015.[7]

In 2015, Hyeri was cast as the lead of the drama Reply 1988.[8] The drama premiered in November and went on to become a success with audience ratings peaking at 18.8%, making it the highest-rated show in Korean cable television history. Hyeri received critical and audience acclaim for her portrayal of Sung Duk-seon.

In 2016, Hyeri was cast as a lead in the SBS drama Entertainer along with actor Ji Sung and CNBLUE member Kang Min-hyuk, which began airing on April 20, 2016.[9]

Endorsements

The success of Reply 1988 combined with Hyeri's status as an icon of aegyo led to her becoming one of the most in-demand advertising models in South Korea. The sales of products such as 7-Eleven lunch boxes and Nongshim ramen increased by 78% and 50% respectively after Hyeri's endorsement.[10]

She was awarded with the plaque of appreciation by the Ministry of Employment and Labour for "promoting minimum wage awareness and compliance through a TV commercial that features Hyeri saying, Part-timers are 'gab' (the superior party to a contract) and Korea's statutory minimum wage is 5,580 won an hour" in March, 2015.[11]

As of February 2016, Hyeri has earned over 12 billion KRW (~$10.37 million USD) with over 30 ad gigs to her name, receiving at least 400 million KRW for a six-month contract.[12] She ranked 3rd in Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list in 2016.

Philantrophy

Ere the Lunar New Year of 2016, Hyeri secretly donated 50 millon KRW to Community Chest of Korea towards improving elderly welfare. [13]

She was appointed as the ambassador for 'Free Semester Program' by the Ministry of Education in September, 2016.[14]

Personal life

Hyeri began a relationship with H.O.T member Tony An in March 2013, but broke up after 8 months. The relationship attracted media attention due to their 16-year age difference.[15]
