Lappeenranta Airport (IATA: LPP, ICAO: EFLP) (Finnish: Lappeenrannan lentoasema) is an international airport in Lappeenranta, Finland. Opened in 1918, Lappeenranta Airport is Finland's oldest still operating airport. In 2011, approximately 116,000 passengers used the airport.[2] The Karelia Aviation Museum is located at the airport. In 2016 the ownership of the airport changed from the state-owned Finavia to new private company Lappeenrannan Lentoasema Oy.[3]

Effective 22 October 2015 there are no regular commercial passenger flights to or from Lappeenranta airport. There are few leisure flights to European holiday destinations that depart and arrive at Lappeenranta Airport.[4]

Until 2006 the airport had a relatively stable flow of domestic business travellers, but after 2009 it has relied on international low-price flights, with higher volatility. The reason for the passenger decline from 2006 to 2009 was mainly the opening of the new railway shortcut Lahti–Kerava in September 2006. The shortcut shortened the travel time by rail to Helsinki and caused the closure of the Helsinki air route. In March 2010, Ryanair started flights to Lappeenranta, its second destination in Finland after Tampere. AirBaltic flew to Lappeenranta from November 2009 to January 2014. In 2015, Ryanair announced ceasing flights to Lappeenranta.[7] The last scheduled flight to Bergamo was operated on 21 October 2015.[8]

Ground transportation

Lappeenranta airport is connected to the city and Lappeenranta railway station by local bus number 4 leaving in front of the airport terminal. There is a direct connection further to Helsinki from Lappeenranta railway station by VR train and Matkahuolto expressbus. The distance from Lappeenranta airport to Lappeenranta railway station is 2.5 kilometers. Taxi service is also available.
