Lam Wei Haur (Chinese: 林伟豪; pinyin: Lin Weihao; born 15 June 1978 in Ipoh, Perak),[1][2] also known as Wei-Haur Lam, WH Lam, W Lam, is a Malaysian Scientist[3] and professor in ocean engineering.

Life

He is the fourth child in the family.

Education

Lam started his primary education in SRJK Liman Kati in village for 4 years and continued his early education in SRJK Tsung Wah and SMJK Tsung Wah in Kuala Kangsar Town. In higher education, Lam continued his study in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, which is the university in Malaysia accepting SPM students (O level) instead of STPM students (A level). Lam obtained his BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering on time and started his academic life in Southern University College (Chinese community funded non-profit institution), Skudai. In his first academic position, Lam worked as a lecturer in computer science due to his final year project in programming and started his full time study in MSc Computer Science in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Lam moved to a new lectureship in Mantissa College, Kuala Lumpur. Lam accepted the full PhD scholarship from Virtual Engineering Centre, Queen's University Belfast. He started to implement the computer science knowledge to investigate the fluid flow using computer modelling and validate the computational results using experiments. Lam obtained his PhD in 2008 and completed two postdocs in Queen's University Belfast and University of Plymouth. Lam moved to Dalian University of Technology due to the opportunities to pursue the research in marine renewable energy and invented Folding Tidal Turbine. Later he moved back to Kuala Lumpur as an associate professor in University of Malaya[4] and as a visiting scholar in Oxford University. Lam now is a full professor in ocean engineering, Tianjin University.

Research works

His research works focuses on the marine renewable energy with computational application. Lam promoted PhD researches and shared views in his book 1st Lesson of PhD Research.[5] He proposed the Lam-Chen equations used to predict the wake behind the turbine based on the continuous works of ship's propeller researches in Queen's University Belfast and axial momentum theory. Lam now pushes forward the marine renewable energy with combination of solar power and wind power for small scale usage to solve the electricity problems in Islands and promoted his invention of Folding Tidal Turbine (FTT) for simple transportation and installation to save cost and time.[6]
