LIDAR Analyst is an automatic feature extraction application that uses airborne lidar (LIght raDAR) data to create three-dimensional vector objects.[1] Users of the software include federal geospatial analysts, local community GIS managers, university researchers, and GIS service providers. The software is published by Overwatch Systems, Ltd., an operating unit of Textron Systems.

Overview

LIDAR Analyst was initially developed and released by Visual Learning Systems in 2005. Overwatch acquired Visual Learning Systems and the Feature Analyst software in 2006.[2]

Airborne lidar generates high resolution point measurements of objects as a lidar-equipped aircraft flies over the ground. The resulting lidar point cloud data must be manipulated to become useful. The LIDAR Analyst software automatically converts lidar data into 3D objects such as terrain, buildings, and trees. LIDAR Analyst includes editing tools to improve the quality of the resulting 3D shapefiles and models.[3]

LIDAR Analyst extension adds lidar 3D feature extraction capability to Esri’s ArcGIS.
