Kyoto Notre Dame University (京都ノートルダム女子大学), also known as KNDU, is a small private university for woman in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan. This is one of the catholic universities in Japan. Notre Dame means “Our lady”.

Overview

KNDU located near the residential area in Kyoto city. Kyoto Botanical Garden, Kyoto concert hall, Shimogamo-jinja shrine, and Daimonji-Yama are near from KNDU. University ranking is 491st out of 696 in all Japanese university. KNDU give certificate of teacher, librarian, and museum curator in all departments. KNDU has student who came all over the world. The students mostly came from China. Other countries are Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Philippines.

Mission

The motto of university is “Virtue and Knowledge”. This means KNDU teach not only knowledge, but also teach moral or sense of values. The mission faiths for student are respect, communication, sympathy, and action. It explains about “Virtue and Knowledge” to understand easily. The goal of KNDU is “Be a lady”. It means all of students will be a cultured and refined lady such as Our Lady (the Virgin Mary).

History

KNDU was founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. In 1948, the Kyoto Catholic Church asked School Sisters of Notre Dame about found a school for women and 4 sisters came to Kyoto to found a junior high school. In 1961, Notre Dame University was founded with the Department of English and Literature in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The university name changed to Kyoto Notre Dame University in 1994.

KNDU established the Department of Life and Culture in 1963, the Department of Cross-Cultural Studies, and the Department of Social Science and Welfare in 2000. The name of the Department Life and Culture changed to the Department of Psychology in 2005.

In 1979, the study abroad program was started. The first students studied at the Notre Dame of Maryland University in the USA. In 2009, it was accredited by the Japanese University Accreditation Association.

Departments

There are 4 departments in KNDU.

The Department of English and Literature

KNDU offer to English teacher certificate, librarian certification or museum curator certification. In addition, KNDU has a special airline industry program with ANA (All Nippon Airways). It teach about business manner, hospitality, and airline industry. It mostly hold for students who want to be a flight attendant, but all students in the Department of English and Literature can take this program.

The Department of Cross-Cultural Studies

KNDU offer to Japanese teacher certificate, librarian certification, museum curator certification or social worker certificate.

The Department of Social Science and Welfare

KNDU offer to home economics teacher certificate, nursery teacher certificate, librarian certification, museum curator certification or social worker certificate.

The Department of Psychology

KNDU offer to elementary school teacher certificate, nursery school teacher certificate, child psychologist certificate, librarian certification, museum curator certification and social worker certificate.

KNDU has many programs of study abroad such as accredited semester abroad programs, academic exchange programs, short term overseas programs, and overseas internship. Also it has many partner university all of the world such as The USA, The United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Denmark.
