Karma Online

Karma Online (Korean: 카르마 온라인) is a Korean multi-player First-person shooter developed by Dragonfly and provided by Netmarble from 2002.12.18 to 2006.07.30. The game was popular as it first came out in South Korea.

The plot of the game is based on two different conflicts: Germans versus Soviets in 1940s, known as "past", and Earth Nation (EN) versus Resistance in Empire (RIE) in the 2080s, known as "future". However, because the game was heavily based on player versus player environment, the plot is not known to many players.

Plot

Past

During the war between Third Reich and Soviet Union in World War II, a team of German specialists called Kampyarger infiltrated a secret research facility of Red Army where the Soviets were running a project called Genome Project to create an army of super-soldiers by cloning and manipulating human genes. The German agents successfully gained access to Genome Project, but Yugger Piper, head of Kampyarger, who wanted the project for himself, assassinated every Kampyarger members and everyone else who knew about the project. and vanished.

The game is based on the war itself and battles between Soviet soldiers and German soldiers.

Future

The mysterious leader calling himself, Piper (assumed to be Yugger Piper from the Past who used Genome Project for himself), conquered earth with his army of enhanced-soldiers in 2025 and created an empire called Earth Nation (EN). Piper prohibited philosophy, arts and religion and imprisoned politicians, priests, artists and others who were potential threats to his rule. In 2080, Piper sent prisoners to labor during the construction of EN base at Mars. However, in Mars, a rebellion erupted under a rule of Dr. Ahimsha. The rebelled named themselves as Resistance in Empire (RIE) and took control of EN base at Mars.

Gameplay

The players can choose a timeline between Past and Future then choose a faction based on chosen timeline: Axis/Allies (Past) and Earth Nation/Resistance in Empire and choose a weapon they could have yield.

The game used to be free for everyone but the playtime was limited as 30 minutes. In 2003, Mercenary Service for paid players were initiated. Players who paid for Mercenary Service were rewarded with following benefits.

This service was criticized and the game started to lose popularity. As Sudden Attack got popular, the service was ended in 2006.
