Kailash Vijayvargiya (born May 13, 1956 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh) is currently serving as National General Secretary of Bhartiya Janta Party,[1] starting his political career in Indore Bhartiya Janta Party and was Mayor of Indore city, a six-time legislator who has never lost an assembly election, Mr Vijayvargiya had been a cabinet minister in the state government for over 12 years before he was elevated to the party's central leadership.[2]

Vijavargiya was appointed BJP's election in-charge for Haryana's Assembly Polls in 2014,[3] after which BJP romped to an absolute majority in the assembly election. This victory ensured that he would be given more important roles in the near future on central level and was proved when in June 2015, he was appointed as National General Secretary by Party President Amit Shah.[4] And as expected, after his performance in Haryana, he was appointed as the new in-charge of the party in West Bengal.[5]


Political career

Kailash Vijayvargiya entered politics through Vidyarthi Parishad in 1975. He became Corporator of Indore Municipal Corporation in 1983 and a member of Standing Committee in 1985. He has been State Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Bharatiya Janata Party, Indore and Coordinator of State BJP Legal Cell. He became State Coordinator of Vidyarthi Parishad in 1985, State Vice-President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1992 and National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and in-charge of Gujarat in 1993. Shri Vijayvargiya was elected to Vidhan Sabha in 1990, 1993, 1998 and 2003. From Dr. Ambedkar Nagar-Mhow, considered safe seat of opposition Congress, while fighting a tough election, he was elected to 13th Vidhan Sabha for the 5th time in 2008 and 6th time consecutively in year 2013. [6] He was in charge of the BJP's Haryana state assembly election campaign, when the party registered its first win in Haryana state assembly election taking BJP's tally from 4 to 47 seats.[7] He was named as National General Secretary of Bhartiya Janta Party as well as state in-charge for West Bengal in 2015.[8]

Kailash Vijayvargiya became the first directly-elected Mayor of Indore Municipal Corporation in 2000. The same year, he was nominated as Vice-President and President of All-India Mayors’ Council and was felicitated as the best mayor at World Mayors’ Conference in Honolulu. The same year, he was invited to China as a member of Preparation Committee of World Earth Summit. Consequent to his excellent environmental improvement works in Indore, the city was conferred the “Clean City, Green City Award” in 2002. The same year, he was invited by the British Prime Minister to share experiences of public participation in urban development. Later, he was invited by Garland City (America) for signing an agreement for urban development through partnership. He was nominated as President of South Asia Mayors’ Council in 2003 and led the Indian Voluntary Organisation’s team at World Earth Summit Durban.[10]

In state administration

Kailash Vijayvargiya was sworn-in as Cabinet Minister on December 8, 2008, and given portfolios of Public Works, Parliamentary Affairs, Urban Administration and Development (Only works related to Simhastha-Kumbh). He was given a portfolio of Religious Trusts, Endowment, and Rehabilitation on July 1, 2004. Shri Vijayvargiya again joined Shri Babulal Gaur’s Council of Minister as Public Works Minister on August 27, 2004. He was re-inducted in Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Council of Minister on December 4, 2005, as Public Works, Information Technology, Science & Technology Minister.

Vijayvargiya was felicitated by United Nations for significant efforts to build public opinion for fulfilling Millennium Development Goals prescribed by United Nations in 2006. Due to Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya’s efforts, Madhya Pradesh received 3 prestigious awards in information technology sector in 2007. Shri Vijayvargiya has also received the prestigious Building Industries Leadership Award.

In the second cabinet under Shivraj Singh Chauhan (post-2008 elections) Vijayvargiya held portfolios of IT and Industries. In the third cabinet (post-2013 elections), Shri Vijayvargiya held the portfolio of Urban Development.[11]
