KSKS is a commercial radio station located in Fresno, California, broadcasting on 93.7 FM. KSKS airs a country music format branded as "Kiss Country". Its studios are located at the Radio City building on Shaw Avenue in North Fresno and its transmitter is near Auberry, California.

KSKS is licensed by the FCC to broadcast in the HD (digital hybrid) format.[1]

Its full name is Kiss Country, although it was nicknamed "Carrie Country" for advertising Carrie Underwood concert at the Save Mart Center.

History

KRFM was the original call sign and was licensed to Fresno California in 1946. The first owner was Paul Bartlett, a Fresno radio station pioneer. During a time in the late 1940s and early 1950s the station had a studio at its transmitter site at Meadow Lakes, California. Later the station's call sign was changed to KFRE-FM. The station operated on 99,793.79FM from its beginning.

KFRE-FM was group-operated with KFRE AM on 940 AM and KFRE-TV, which originally operated on VHF channel 12, later UHF channel 30. The call sign change from KFRE-FM to KFYE was made necessary by the FCC required breakup of KFRE-AM, KFRE-TV and KFRE-FM, with all stations being sold by Triangle Publications to separate owners in 1971.

Prior to becoming "Kiss Country" in 1992, the station had an adult contemporary format known as "Y-94" with the callsign KFYE. In the 1980s, Ray Appleton hosted "Lunchtime at the Oldies" on Y-94. Ray would go on to become a popular talk show host at KMJ.

On November 16, 2006, CBS Radio announced the sale of KSKS and their other Fresno stations to Peak Broadcasting.

On August 30, 2013, a deal was announced in which Townsquare Media would purchase Peak Broadcasting, and then immediately swap Peak's Fresno stations, including KSKS, to Cumulus Media in exchange for Cumulus' stations in Dubuque, Iowa and Poughkeepsie, New York. The deal is part of Cumulus' acquisition of Dial Global; Peak, Townsquare, and Dial Global are all controlled by Oaktree Capital Management.[2][3] The sale to Cumulus was completed on November 14, 2013.[4]
