Jordan Reginald Howard (born November 2, 1994) is an American football running back for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Alabama-Birmingham and Indiana.

High school

Howard played at Gardendale High School in Gardendale, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. Howard was a two-year starter for the Rockets, gaining 2,876 yards in his junior and senior seasons.[1] While he excelled for the Rockets, he was generally regarded as a just two-star prospect and was not highly sought after by major college programs. He ended up just a few miles away from his home at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

College career

Howard began his college football career at UAB in 2013. He made his collegiate debut against LSU.[2] He ran for a season-high 159 yards against FIU.[3] He finished the 2013 season with 881 rushing yards.[4] His longest rushing play of the season was 52 yards against Vanderbilt.[5] Howard was second in yards per carry (6.1) in Conference USA.[6]

As a sophomore in 2014, he set a UAB single-season record with 1,587 rushing yards and ranked seventh among Division I FBS players with an average of 132.3 rushing yards per game.[7] Howard was 2nd in rushing yards in Conference USA.[8]

Indiana

Following the shutdown of UAB's football team, Howard transferred to Indiana prior to the 2015 season.[9][10] He rushed for a season-high 238 yards and two touchdowns against Michigan on November 14, 2015.[11]

Professional career

On December 27, 2015, Howard declared for the NFL draft, foregoing his senior season.[12] Howard was graded a 6.1 on NFL.com and had the third-highest RB rating with only Derrick Henry at 6.15, and Ezekiel Elliott at 7.09 having higher ratings than him. Howard was selected in the fifth round, 150th overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft.[15] Howard was the 10th RB taken in the draft. On May 9, 2016, Howard signed a $2,588,022.00, 4-year contract with a $248,022 signing bonus.[16][17]

On September 19, 2016, Howard made his NFL debut against the Philadelphia Eagles, rushing for 22 yards on 3 carries after Ka'Deem Carey had a hamstring injury.[18] On September 25, 2016, Howard ran for a 36-yard gain against the Dallas Cowboys.[19] Howard also caught 4 passes for 47 yards.[20] On October 2, 2016, Howard ran for a career-high 111 yards on 23 carries against the Detroit Lions, his first 100+ yard game in the NFL.[21] Howard became the Bears' first running back to top 100 yards in his first NFL start since Matt Forte in 2008 (123 yards).[22] On October 9, 2016, Howard recorded 118 yards on 16 carries against the Indianapolis Colts for his second consecutive 100+ yard game, the first Bears rookie to do so since Anthony Thomas in 2001, but the first in franchise history to accomplish the feat in his first two career starts.[23][24] He also recorded a 57-yard run in the game, the longest Bears rushing play since Matt Forte's 61-yard run against the Eagles in 2010.[23] On October 16, 2016, Howard scored his first rushing touchdown of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars.[25] On October 31, 2016, against the Minnesota Vikings, Howard ran for 153 yards on 26 carries, with one touchdown.[26] This included a 69-yard run from scrimmage, the longest since Khalil Bell's 72-yard run in November 2009.[26] Howard became the first Bears rookie to produce more than 200 yards from scrimmage in a game since Gale Sayers in 1965.[27] Howard's 153 rushing yards were the most by a Bears player since Matt Forte in 2011 (205 yards).[27] Howard was named the 'NFC's Offensive Player of the Week' for his performance.[27] He is the first Bears rookie to win the award since running back Anthony Thomas in 2001.[27] On November 13, 2016, Howard ran for 100 yards on 15 carries against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his fourth time breaking the century mark.[28] On November 20, 2016, Howard ran for 77 yards on 17 carries against the New York Giants.[29] Howard recorded a 27-yard run.[30] On November 27, 2016, Howard ran for 84 yards on 18 carries and caught 3 passes for 43 yards against the Tennessee Titans.[31] Howard recorded a 22-yard run and a 23-yard reception.[32][33] On December 4, 2016, Howard ran for 117 yards on 32 carries and 3 touchdowns against the New York Giants.[34][35][36][37] Howard's three touchdowns are tied for the 2nd most by a Bears rookie in a game.[38] Hall-of-Famer Gale Sayers ran for four touchdowns in 1965.[38] Howard joined 5 others as the only Bears running backs to rush for 100-plus yards and score three touchdowns in a single game. (Rashaan Salaam in 1995, Walter Payton in 1977, twice in 1979 and 1980, Bobby Douglass in 1973, Gale Sayers in 1965, and Willie Galimore in 1957).[38] Howard recorded a 17-yard run.[39]

Personal life

Howard is the son of Flora Williams and Dr. Reginald Bernard "Doc" Howard, a dentist. His father died at age 52 on January 31, 2007, of pulmonary fibrosis, since that date, he has worn a white t-shirt with Doc's photo printed on it under his pads for each game. He is a supporter of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.[40]
