Early life

Joo Hyun-Mi was born to hwagyo parents who lived in Gwangju, South Korea. She visited Hanseung Hwagyo High school, then studied Pharmacy in Jung-Ang University in Seoul. As a child she's been said that she had a talent to imitate Korean Gayo singer, above all I Mi-Ja; she amused relatives and neighbors by imitated songs. In 1981 she, as a member of a university vocal group, attended in 'MBC-Riverside' music festival and received a prize of encouragement. After university study, she opened a drug store. A friend of her father recommended her to sing a number of cover songs of various trot singers. So she launched into popular music business. Though she was de facto a 'nobody' in this branch, her discs, so-called 'Pair-Party Trot Medley'(쌍쌍파티) had success extraordinarily. This compilation was shrouded in legend so that lots of truck drivers brought song tape and heard her cover songs on the road. She debuted officially in 1985 with the first album Binaerineun Yeongdonggyo (비 내리는 영동교, The rainy Yeongdonggyo Bridge).[1]
