John William Nicholson, Jr. (born May 8, 1957) is a United States Army general who most recently served as commanding general, Allied Land Command (since October 2014).[1] Additionally he served as the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. Nicholson is the son of John W. Nicholson, also a former general officer in the United States Army, distantly related to British Brigadier John Nicholson (1822–1857).[2] On 4 February 2016, Nicholson was confirmed for a fourth star and to become General John F. Campbell's successor as commander of Resolute Support Mission and U.S. Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A).[3] He took over command from Campbell on March 2, 2016.

Career

John W. ("Mick") Nicholson Jr. graduated from West Point in 1982 and was commissioned into the infantry.[4] He earned a Bronze Star with "V" device as a paratroop lieutenant during the invasion of Grenada in 1983.

He was a strategist for Eric Shinseki at the point of the 9/11 attacks.[5] He went on to do four tours of Afghanistan.

Nicholson was the deputy director of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization.[6] He became commander of the 82nd Airborne Division in 2012.

In 2014 Nicholson took control of Allied Land Command in Izmir, Turkey.[7]

Nicholson told the Senate Armed Services Committee in 2016 that “Since 9/11, the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan has largely defined my service.”[8][9] Nicholson was given command of the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, amid a worsening security situation.[10][11][12][13]

Nicholson apologized in person for U.S. involvement in the Kunduz hospital airstrike.[14][15]

Personal life

Fraudulent emails in Nicholson's name

There have been fraudulent emails purporting to be from Nicholson but totally unconnected with him, either asking for assistance in moving funds (419 scam),[16] or using his name and photograph relating to shipping a box of gold.
