John Early (bishop)

John Early (died 1883) was a Methodist prelate and one of the founders of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, serving as one of its bishops from 1854 through 1866.

He was born in Bedford County, Virginia. He became a founder and one of the members of the board of Randolph Macon College. Early was bishop of the Holston Conference from 1862-1865 and led the Conference in its expulsion of pro-Union itinerant ministers during the Civil War.[1] He died in 1883.
