Jan-Henrik Norberger (born in Hamburg, Germany on 7 March 1975) is an Australian politician. He is the member for the Western Australian Legislative Assembly seat of Joondalup.[1] Within parliament he is currently serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Planning; Disability Services.[2] Norberger holds an MBA(Oil & Gas) and an Advanced Diploma of Accounting.[3]
Early life
Norberger was seven years old when his family emigrated from Germany to Perth, Australia. His family built their first home in Ocean Reef, part of Perth's northern suburbs. Jan attended Mullaloo Heights Primary School and Prendiville Catholic College, living in Ocean Reef and Edgewater during that time.[4]
Career
After graduating from Prendiville Catholic College in 1992, Norberger worked as a landscaper before joining the Royal Australian Air Force as a Communications and Information Systems Controller (CISCON).[5] He served in the RAAF for six years, attaining the rank of Corporal and receiving an Officer Commanding Commendation for outstanding professionalism. During his time in the RAAF, he attained Microsoft Certified Professional classifications as a Solutions Developer (MCSD) and Systems Engineer (MCSE).[6]
Norberger left the RAAF in 2001, continuing to work in the IT industry until taking up the position of General Manager at Timor Aviation Services and DHL East Timor in Dili, East Timor.[7] He returned to Perth in July 2005 to take up the role of State Commercial Manager at Toll Priority, then joined Richards Mining Services as their General Manager in July 2007.[8]
Norberger managed Richards Mining Services for five and a half years until the end of 2012.[9]
He was awarded the WA Business News 40under40 award in 2012, with the judging panel citing his business successes and community activities as factors influencing their decision.[10]
Entry into state politics
On 10 March 2012, Norberger was endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate for the then Labor-held seat of Joondalup.[11] The seat of Joondalup had been held by Labor since 2001 and was seen as a key seat in the lead-up to the 2013 State Election.[12] At the 2013 state election Norberger attained a 7.8% swing to the Liberals to win the seat with a 4.5% margin, attaining 50.3% of the primary vote.[13]
Norberger was sworn in as the Member for Joondalup on 11 April 2013. He is a serving member of the Economics and Industry Standing Committee, having undertaken inquiries into Floating LNG, Freight Rail and FLNG Safety.[14]
A redrawing of state electoral boundaries in December 2015 saw the seat of Joondalup cede the suburbs of Craigie and Joondalup and gain Mullaloo and Ocean Reef.[15] These boundary changes had the effect of strengthening the seat’s margin to 10.4%.[16]
On 29 March 2016 Premier Colin Barnett promoted Norberger to Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Planning; Disability Services as part of his broader cabinet re-shuffle.[17]
