James Brandt Curran (born 19 August 1986) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. James is more commonly known by his stage name 'Jamesthemormon'. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and uses his songs to share his beliefs.[1]

History

James studied at BYU (Brigham Young University). He served as a missionary for the LDS church in Rostov Na Donu, Russia for six months and then finished his Russian speaking mission in Everett, Washington. After two years of missionary service, he returned to Utah where he would soon take off his career as a rapper. He started his journey by posting videos on his YouTube channel which attracted much attention from the Mormon community. He would soon release 'I'm Not a Rapper' which would soon after hit number 1 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/ rap chart.[2] 'I'm Not a Rapper' went on to reach #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.[3]

Music career

At the age of 17, Curran had already began writing, recording and performing music. Despite putting his musical dreams on hold for 2 years whilst serving as a missionary in Russia, he continued by posting covers and original songs on the popular media-streaming platform, YouTube. His first studio album, Pmg, teaches the doctrines of the LDS faith in the form of music and lyrics; Pmg standing for Preach My Gospel.
