James Attwood is an American businessman. He serves as the managing director of The Carlyle Group and chairman of Nielsen Holdings PLC. He is a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs and EVP of Verizon Communications. He is a major donor to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.

Early life

James Attwood graduated summa cum laude from Yale University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics in 1980.[1][2] He earned a master of arts degree in statistics from Harvard University, and a juris doctor/master in business administration from the Harvard Business School in 1984.[1][2][3]

Career

Attwood started his career as an investment banker for Goldman Sachs, where he worked in New York City and Tokyo for eleven years.[1][2] He subsequently served as the Executive Vice President for Strategy, Development and Planning for Verizon Communications and the GTE Corporation for four years.[1][4] He joined The Carlyle Group in 2000, where he serves as Head of the Global Telecommunications and Managing Director.[1]

Attwood joined the board of directors of Nielsen Holdings in 2006.[1] He serves as its chairman.[1] He has served on the board of directors of CoreSite since September 2010.[4] He also serves on the board of directors of Syniverse.[5]

Political activity

Attwood donated $100,000 in 2015 and $100,000 in 2016 to Correct the Record, a Super PAC which supports Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.[6] He also donated $250,000 to Priorities USA Action, another pro-Hillary Clinton Super PAC, in 2016, as well as smaller donations to the Hillary Victory Fund and Hillary for America.[7]

Personal life

Attwood has a wife, Leslie.[3] They reside in Bedford Hills, New York and Martha's Vineyard, where his neighbor is Alan Dershowitz.[3][6] He collects wine.[3]
