James "Jim" Orenthal no known last name, is a fictional character from the American sitcom, According to Jim. He is portrayed by James Belushi. He is the title character of the series. His character is considered a macho "everyman" who adores his children.[1]

The name is taken from O.J. Simpson, whose initials stand for Orenthal James.

Background

Jim grew up with his sister and mother after his father left him at a young age. He got into a lot of trouble which taught him how to scheme and to keep out of trouble. He has also been trained as a classical ballroom dancer. He married his wife Cheryl and works as a contractor and has his own contracting business with his brother in law Andy. James "Jim" Orenthal, (whereby Orenthal is his second name. The family's surname has never been revealed during the show's run.) is an abrasive but lovable suburban father. Much like his real life counterpart, Jim's character is noted as a fan of blues music, as well as the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Blackhawks. Together with his wife Cheryl, whose second name is Mabel, they have three children: Ruby, Gracie and Kyle. In the end of the 7th season they become proud parents of the twins Jonathan and Gordon. The family residence is 412 Maple Street, Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Jim often finds himself in messy situations because his laziness inclines him to search for alternative ways of doing things with less effort. While Cheryl's brother Andy may be Jim's best friend, her sister Dana frequently teams up with Cheryl against Jim.
