The International School of Kigali-Rwanda (ISKR) is a young, dynamic school which is just entering its seventh year of existence. The school was born out the desire for an international school that delivers a high-quality education to students residing in Kigali. The curriculum delivered at ISKR is based on an American-styled approach, blended with international best practices. A full program is offered that includes studies in art, foreign language, physical education, and many other co-curricular classes. In 2013-14, ISKR began offering the prestigious Advanced Placement (AP) program for the very first time, and in January 2015, the school began to implement the inquiry-based International Primary Curriculum in the Elementary School. ISKR embraces the diversity of its students and staff and encourages students to develop an appreciation for Rwanda through service, education, and off-site activities. Students attending ISKR are given an education that will prepare them to attend any university worldwide. ISKR is recognized and accredited by the CIS (Council of International Schools) and NEASC (The New England Association of Schools and Colleges).

Organization

The International School of Kigali-Rwanda was conceived during May 2009, out of a growing desire for additional options for international education in Kigali. A group of families came together and formed a working group that helped incorporate and establish the school. They hired a director and began planning for the coming school year.

The school is divided into three sections: 1. The Early Childhood Center 2. The Elementary School 3. The Secondary School. Teachers are predominantly from the US, with the UK, Canada, Uganda, Sri Lanka, and Kenya also represented.

Facilities

In March 2014, ISKR relocated to a new campus in Nyarutarama, conveniently located near the MTN Center. The new campus boasts larger, light-filled classrooms and a self-contained Preschool section, as well as a new science lab and special use facilities for art and drama. An expanded library and media lab overlooking the beautiful hills and lake of Kigali fill the upper storey. We are also thrilled about our play spaces, which include a new elementary playground and a full-sized basketball court.

Students

ISKR has a diverse student body with 40 nationalities represented. The largest groups are American (30%), Rwandan (11%), Dutch (10%), and British (7%). The remaining students are from around the world.

For this current school year 2015/2016, there are about 215 students. Classes are capped at 23 students.

Teachers are also from a variety of countries, with the majority coming from the USA and UK. Other nationalities represented include Sri Lankan, Rwandan, Canadian, Ugandan, Zimbabwean and Cameroonian.
