The International Journal of Epidemiology is a bimonthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering research in epidemiology. It encourages communication among those engaged in the research, teaching, and application of epidemiology of both communicable and non-communicable disease, including research into health services and medical care. It is the official journal of the International Epidemiological Association and is published by Oxford University Press. The journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics.
Journal Content
In addition to its peer-reviewed original research articles and accompanying commentaries, the journal regularly includes the following sections:
- Editorials: Editorials present the view of the authors on a wide range of topics related to Epidemiology.
- Reprints and Reflections: Each issue of the IJE includes the reprint of at least one classic paper, selected by the Editors, that has lasting influence on the discipline. Commentaries are invited from the original authors, if still alive, and others currently working in the field.
- Diversions: A miscellaneous collection of poems, song lyrics, snippets, vignettes etc that broadly reflect some facet of Epidemiology.
- Cochrane Column: This column features a Cochrane Review pertinent to health in countries with high disease burdens. Reviews selected are those with interesting methodological features, or challenges related to interpretation and applicability.
- Cohort Profiles: A long-running, popular series which provides up-to-date details of cohort studies across the world. Each profile includes key information about a particular cohort in sufficient detail to enable interested researchers to form collaborations and maximise use of existing resources.
- Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS) Profiles: An invited series of profiles of the Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites that are members of the INDEPTH network.
- Data Resource Profiles: This series covers any dataset of use to epidemiologists that falls outside the rubric of a cohort study. It includes large randomised controlled trials and clinical case series with long-term follow-up. Typical examples include the Human Mortality Database and the Indian National Family Health Survey Study.
- Education Corner: The purpose of this series is to provide easily accessible concise updates and reviews of epidemiologic concepts and methods suitable for educational use.
- Photo Essays: Photo Essays are articles that relate in directly or indirectly to health and well-being and which use photographs as their main means of communication.

History
The International Journal of Epidemiology was established in 1972 by the International Epidemiological Association (IEA) in a bid to facilitate international communication among its members and all those engaged in research, teaching and the application of epidemiology. The Journal’s first editor, Walter W. Holland, hoped to ‘overcome some of the problems of publication of epidemiological work in local journals, which often tend to be unavailable to workers outside that country’ and to ‘create an international viewpoint of health problems.’[1]
The International Journal of Epidemiology has since grown to become a leading epidemiology journal along with Environmental Health Perspectives, Epidemiologic Reviews, Epidemiology, and the American Journal of Epidemiology. In 2013 the International Journal of Epidemiology became the number one public, environmental and occupational health journal, according to the Thomson Reuters impact factor ranking.[2]
