Inside Philanthropy is a news website for the nonprofit sector founded by David Callahan in 2013.[1] It aims to increase oversight and transparency in the sector. It covers giving in the arts, education, economy, environment, health, science, impact investing, and issues with both a global and a local focus. It also serves as a gateway for jobs in the philanthropy sector. It rates foundation program offices by their performance, not the nonprofits they fund.[2] It issues its own set of IP Philanthropy Awards, such as the Philanthropist of the Year award and the Boldest Philanthropic Vision award.[3][4]
It profiles major donors in philanthropy by their wealth, giving philosophy, and notable donations. Some of the profiled donors are in the technology industry (such as Mark Zuckerberg),[5] those in the entertainment industry, and those on Wall Street.[6] It has been known to call out wealthy people who score relatively poorly on "relative generosity", or percentage of wealth that a person has given away, even if they still give out a comparatively large amount of money in absolute terms.[7]
It also profiles philanthropic foundations in several key sectors, listing their key people, assets, their grants, past work, and articles. Some foundations that it profiles include the Russell Sage Foundation,[8] the Kavli Foundation, and Intel Foundation.
One of its articles, written by its founder, raises concerns of the trend that philanthropy may be subverting democracy by letting wealthy individuals convert wealth into power.[9]
