Injustice 2 is an upcoming fighting video game being developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is the sequel to 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us. The game is scheduled for release in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.[2] Similar to the previous installment, a mobile version will also be developed for iOS and Android devices.[3]

Gameplay

Injustice 2 retains numerous gameplay mechanics from Injustice: Gods Among Us, including environment interaction, stage transitions, clashes, and character traits.[4][5][6] The trait system, like before, provides a temporary buff or ability that compliments each character's playstyle.[4] The super meter, which allows players to execute enhanced special moves and unlock powerful "super moves" when fully charged, also returns.[7] Players can now expend meter to perform an evasive roll maneuver or escape an enemy's combo early.[4][7]

Injustice 2 introduces a loot-dropping system, known as the "Gear System", which offers character-specific costume pieces and equipment with status-altering effects.[8] According to NetherRealm Studios, the Gear System uses RPG-like mechanics to reward players with loot after every match.[2] With each loot drop, players earn gear that allows them to customize the look of their characters and strengthen their abilities, such as increasing their strength, speed, defense, health, or unlocking new moves.[9] Players can swap various costume pieces, such as arms, legs, chest armor, capes, and shields; each character will have over 1,000 options for each category.[9] Online multiplayer will feature matchmaking options that separate players who wish to fight geared or non-geared characters.[4][9] Game modes will be implemented that disable Gear System upgrades and modifications, providing more balanced gameplay for competitive matches.[10][11] The online infrastructure will utilize the GGPO netcode, which had been used in NetherRealm's previous title, Mortal Kombat X.[12]

Characters

The playable roster for Injustice 2 will include both new and returning heroes and villains.[13] According to Warner Bros. Interactive, the game will feature the "biggest DC roster ever offered in a fighting game."[13] The game will also feature additional characters available as downloadable content.[14] New playable characters are listed below in bold.[15]

Plot

Injustice 2 will continue the storyline established in Injustice: Gods Among Us.[13] Following the defeat of High Councilor Superman, the alternate universe Batman and his Insurgents attempt to piece society back together while struggling against the remnants of Superman's Regime who seek to restore his rule. In the midst of the chaos, a new threat appears that puts Earth's existence at risk.[13]

Development

Injustice 2 was announced by NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on June 8, 2016.[16] Following the success of the first Injustice game, NetherRealm Studios sought to do "something unexpected and long-term" for its sequel, as well as give players "a level of control that makes playing [their] games a truly personal experience."[2][8] NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon also wanted to infuse various gameplay mechanics used by recent multiplayer shooter games, such as personalization, character creation, loot, and leveling up, into the fighting game genre; these ideas eventually led to the implementation of the Gear System.[8] According to producer Adam Urbano, the idea of creating a fighting game utilizing a role playing game-like progression system had been floating around the studio since before the fall of Midway Games, the original publisher for the Mortal Kombat series.[17]

Related media

During NetherRealm Studios' Injustice 2 panel at San Diego Comic-Con International on July 22, 2016, Boon announced a digital comic book series which will detail the backstory to the events of the game.[18] The series will be written by Tom Taylor, who had previously worked on the tie-in comic books for Injustice: Gods Among Us, and will be initially released in weekly chapters through various digital retailers, including ComiXology, Google Play Books, the Kindle Store, and DC Comics' own mobile app.[18][19] Print versions will become available for purchase afterwards, each containing multiple digital chapters.[19]
