Inez Jasper (born Chilliwack, British Columbia), also known by her stage name Inez,[1] is a Canadian singer-songwriter,[2] record producer and sound engineer, actress, nurse, and public speaker.[2]
Known for blending R&B, First Nations music, pop music, and EDM, in 2009 her single "Breathe" won Single of the Year at the Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards (APCMAs). She has released two albums, Singsonggirl (2009) and Burn Me Down (2013), and twice has been nominated for the Juno Award for Aboriginal Album of the Year, once in 2010 and once in 2014.[3] Also in 2014, she was named Best Producer/Engineer at the APCMAs.[4]
A registered nurse and periodic speaker on health issues, for her community contributions the National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) in Ottawa named her the National Aboriginal Role Model in 2008.[2]
Biography
Inez Jasper was born and raised in Chilliwack, British Columbia. She is of Sto:lo, Ojibway and Métis heritage,[2] and her father is a former Skowkale First Nation chief.[5] She soon began writing songs incorporating her roots with modern hip hop and R&B, releasing her first solo album, Singsoulgirl, in 2009.[2] The album won a number of awards at the 2009 Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards in Winnipeg.

For the 19th Annual Indspire Awards, held in Vancouver February 24, 2012 and broadcast nationally (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, Global Television Canada), Inez performed with artists such as Andrea Menard, Jani Lauzon, Rita Coolidge, and Leela Gilday.[6][7]
Her album Burn Me Down was released in August 2013,[8] and in 2014 was nominated for a Juno Award for Aboriginal Album of the Year.
Personal life
Jasper is a mother of two,[5] and in 2010 her ex-husband served briefly as the chief of Soowahlie First Nation.[2] Inez is also a registered nurse, and is known to speak and conduct workshops on a number of health topics.[8] In 2008, for her community contributions she was named the National Aboriginal Role Model by the National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) in Ottawa.[2]
