The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is an Indian media centre of learning funded and promoted by the Government of India in New Delhi.[1][2] IIMC is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.[3] Its one of India's premier institutes for training, teaching and research in mass communication. It was set up by the Government of India in 1965 on the recommendation of a team of internationally known mass communication specialists from UNESCO and the Ford Foundation.[4] The then Minister in charge of Information and Broadcasting, Indira Gandhi formally inaugurated the Institute on 17 August 1965.

The institute

IIMC with its headquarters at Delhi also has five Regional Centres in Aizawl (Mizoram), Amravati (Maharashtra), Dhenkanal (Odisha), Jammu (J&K) and Kottyam (Kerala). The institute stands ahead of others in its infrastructure and permanent faculty status. The per faculty student ratio is pegged at about 1:8, better than any Indian media school.

Most prominent faculties include Senior Journalist Prof. K M Srivastava, Dr. J Jethwaney, Prof. S Raghavachari, Prof. Gita Bamezai, Prof. Hemant Joshi, Shashwati Goswami, Amit Sengupta, Dr. Anand Pradhan, Dr.Anubhuti Yadav and Dr.Sunetra Narain.[5][6]

Campuses

DHENKANAL, ODISHA

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India established the second campus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in 1993 at Dhenkanal, Odisha for meeting the requirements of teaching, training and research in journalism and mass communication of the eastern region of the country. The new campus, spread over 7.5 acres and situated in the valley of Panionhala (meaning Hanging Water in Odia) Hill, commands a majestic view. Located about 80 km from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, Dhenkanal nestles in the rural and tribal hinterland of Central Odisha. It is connected by both rail and road (NH 42).[7]

JAMMU, J&K

IIMC set up its new Regional Centre at Jammu during 2012-13. The Government of Jammu & Kashmir has provided rent free accommodation to IIMC for academic facilities, as well as for the students' hostel and guest house for visiting faculty. In addition, land measuring 11 acres has already been earmarked for setting up of a permanent campus for this Centre, while the process for the allotment of additional 4 acres of land is in its final stages. The construction of a permanent campus will be under taken after the handing over of possession of the complete land of approximately 16 acres to IIMC.[8] The Jammu centre have produced toppers for consecutive 3 years in all 6 regions of the institution since its inception.[9]

AIZAWL, MIZORAM

The Aizawl Regional Centre of IIMC was inaugurated on August 8, 2011. Despite proliferation of newspapers and television channels in the Northeast region of the country, there was hardly any centre for media training facilities in the region. The IIMC’s new Regional Centre at Aizawl aims to bridge this gap by training media professionals who could contribute to this ever burgeoning sector. The Institute is housed in temporary premises provided by the Aizawl University and runs the PG DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM (ENGLISH) at present. Eight acres of land has also been made available to the IIMC by Mizoram University (MZU) within its Aizwal Campus, where a permanent campus for IIMC will come up. An MoU was signed to this effect between the IIMC and MZU.[10]

AMRAVATI, MAHARASHTRA

The Amravati Regional Centre of IIMC was inaugurated on August 8, 2011. Although there were plenty of engineering, medical and management colleges in central and western India, the absence of a quality media institute was being felt. The IIMC opened its Regional Centre in Amravati in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra to fill this vacuum. The campus is presently located in temporary premises provided by the Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University.[11]

KOTTAYAM, KERALA

IIMC Kottayam started regular classes in English Journalism in August 2012. Classes are conducted in the temporary premises arranged for IIMC in the Mahatma Gandhi University campus by the Government of Kerala.[12]
