"Imagination" is the third and final single from German singer Cee Farrow, released 23 August 1991 as a non-album single. The song "Imagination" was an attempt at a comeback, where Farrow had not released any material since his 1983 debut album Red and Blue, and the minor hit single "Should I Love You".[2]

Release

The song, was written by Farrow, producer/drummer Phil Maturano and The Company. It was produced by German born keyboardist and composer Mars Lasar, and co-produced by The Company. The song was recorded via Echo Sound Recording and engineered by Eric Scheda, under Anghel and Son Publishing.[3]

Although the single's front cover only lists Farrow, both the back insert and disc lists the artist as "Cee Farrow + The Company".

A total of three remixes were created for the single, The "Dance Mix", "Euro Mix" and "Instrumental Mix".[4]

The single was released in America only on 12" vinyl, cassette and CD.[4][5][6] On the 12" vinyl, the a-side featured "Imagination (Dance Mix)" whilst the b-side was "Imagination (Instrumental)". Both the cassette and CD version of the single featured the main track and all three remixes.

The 12" single uses picture labels, based on the single's artwork.[5]

The track features female backing vocal although the vocalist isn't credited.

The single remains the only Cee Farrow release on CD, as his debut album was never released on CD.[7]

Today, the single remains out-of-print but can be found second-hand on various online stores, including Amazon.[8]

Background

Recorded during 1991, "Imagination" was an attempt at a comeback for Farrow, after his original record label in 1983, Rocshire Records, had suffered legal problems and all its assets, including master tapes were seized.[9][10] This caused Farrow to withdraw from music and reportedly open his own nightclub around 1987, named The Bitter End.[11]

Now on the small record label Graphite Records, Farrow teamed up with Mars Larsar, Phil Maturano and The Company. "Imagination" was released, manufactured and distributed by Graphite Records, being Farrow's only release on the label. It was the final music release of Farrow's career and the last release from the record label.[12] The label's only other release was the 1990 single "Set Him Free", recorded by Ave Chill and The Company,[13] based on freeing James Brown from prison after he was arrested for domestic violence.[14]

Despite some promotion, including a music video, the single failed to enter any charts.[15]

In May, 1993, Farrow died in West Hollywood, California from a brain disease attributed to AIDS.[11][16]

Music Video

A music video was created for the single, where in recent years it has appeared on the internet, originally officially from Yahoo! and later YouTube.[17][18] It was Farrow's second and final music video, with his first being for his 1983 minor hit single "Should I Love You".[19]

The video features Farrow performing the song on a stage in a nightclub venue, where backing musicians are also featured in parts, as well as dancers. Farrow himself goes between two different appearances, one in a black suit and another in a red jacket with a black undercoat that features crosses on it.[17]

Remixes

A total of three remixes were created for the single.

"Imagination (Dance Mix)" lasts a duration of 6:18 and features a more dominant use of percussion as well as some spoken vocal, based on the song's lyrics, performed by Farrow, and exclusive to the remix. Towards the latter end of the track, the remix use the song's chorus, with the original vocal.

"Imagination (Euro Mix)" lasts a duration of 4:21 and features an alternate backing keyboard melody and piano, whilst using an alternate vocal take, instead of the original version's vocal. The ending features the lyric "Hear what I say" which was not used in the original version.

"Imagination (Instrumental Mix)" lasts a duration of 6:18, using exactly the same remix as the "Dance Mix" but removing all lead vocal, leaving only a hint of backing vocal in places.
