Season chronology

The fifth season of iCarly began airing on Nickelodeon on August 13, 2011 and finished its run on January 21, 2012. This season features Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove), Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy), Freddie Benson (Nathan Kress) and Gibby Gibson (Noah Munck) as their web show, iCarly, is becoming more popular worldwide, with Sam and Freddie now as a confirmed couple, until the episode, "iLove You". Jerry Trainor co-stars as Carly's older brother Spencer, and Noah Munck co-stars as Gibby. This season had the specials "iLost My Mind", "iDate Sam & Freddie", "iBloop 2: Electric Bloopaloo", "iStill Psycho, and "iMeet the First Lady".

Season synopsis

Following the events of "iOMG", where Sam kisses Freddie, she disappears for three days. Carly's knowledge of Sam's cell-phone password and the use of cell-phone-tracking software reveal that Sam has checked herself into a mental hospital. Freddie visits her to find out that she can't handle her mixed feelings of love and hate for him. Freddie, on an iCarly webcast live from the mental institution, reveals that even though Sam likes him and is in denial about it, his feelings are important, too. He walks up to her and kisses her, symbolizing the start of a new relationship.

In the next few episodes ("iLost My Mind", "iDate Sam & Freddie", "iCan't Take It", and "iLove You"), the Sam and Freddie relationship is growing. Sam and Freddie are a couple but they keep fighting and after solving 1 problem, Carly ends up being their involuntary 'couple's counselor'. This starts driving Carly mad when Sam and Freddie end up going to Carly at 3 in the morning for a stupid fight. Carly then ends up being dragged into a dinner date with Sam and Freddie but gets really upset when she has to sit at a table by herself. After a second fight between the two, Carly loses it and goes home leaving Sam and Freddie confused. In the next episode, Spencer is forced to lie to Mrs. Benson about the whereabouts of Freddie because she doesn't know about his and Sam's relationship. Because Sam is in a relationship with Freddie, her previous torture monkey, her new torture monkey is Gibby. Gibby doesn't like how Sam treats him so he decides to consult with Mrs. Benson about Sam and Freddie's relationship. She doesn't approve. In the next episode, Carly suggests that Sam and Freddie try each other's hobbies, but when Sam visits Freddie's model train club she blows up the trains, Freddie gets kicked out. Then Sam takes Freddie to visit her Uncle Carmine and Cousin Chaz in prison, but she also makes him put ham in his pants which eventually gets him caught by security, angering Carmine and Chaz. Sam and Freddie end up deciding to break up at the end because of something Carly said that they overheard about their relationship being forced by a connection they have but their personalities are too different. The relationship ends on a relatively friendly note, with hints of rekindling should one of them work on their personality.

For the first four episodes of this season, the Sam and Freddie storyline ran, stemming off of the iCarly episode, "iOMG".

After the first few episodes of this season, T-Bo now resides in Freddie and Mrs. Benson's apartment in "Bushwell Plaza", after being evicted from "The Groovy Smoothie", which makes him Carly and Spencer's neighbor as well.

Development

In late January 2011, while doing press for her North American Dancing Crazy concert tour, Miranda Cosgrove began telling news sources that she was looking forward to returning to Hollywood to begin filming a 5th season of iCarly.[1][2][3] On January 27, 2011, Cosgrove told Cleveland Live News "We're getting ready to start the next season, right after the tour. I would be willing to do the show as long as people like it and as long as it works."[1] On January 28, 2011, Reuters news agency also reported that Cosgrove was preparing to begin filming a 5th season of iCarly,[2] and on February 3, 2011 Cosgrove told The Middletown Press, when speaking of the show and her co-stars Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress, "I've known them since I was little. I can't wait to get back. I'm really comfortable doing iCarly. It's like my home away from home."[3] Cosgrove concluded her Dancing Crazy concert tour on February 24, 2011, and Jennette McCurdy finished her Generation Love mall tour on April 14, 2011.[4] The entire cast did not even get together until the 2011 Kids' Choice Awards. Miranda Cosgrove recently confirmed that filming would resume shortly.[5] At the 2011 Kids' Choice Awards, Jerry Trainor stated that filming would resume in May.[6]

After the events of iOMG, Sam checks herself into a Mental Institution, after thinking she's insane for liking Freddie. Sam is at first reluctant to see Freddie since she kissed him 3 days before. However, Freddie tells her she has no problems and she decides to leave. Meanwhile Gibby comes face to face with a man named Caleb, a patient who is said to be from the year 2077. Then, they try to get Spencer to play Sam's mother. But the plan backfires when a patient recognizes Spencer from law school. Spencer tries to keep his identity a secret but the plan backfires when he snaps at the patient to stop pulling his wig. The gang then decide to do the webshow from the mental hospital. Freddie tries to tell how he feels about liking Sam and a bunch of other Seddie fans (such as the Seddie yeller from "iStart a Fan War") also tell their feelings. Mrs. Benson comes to the studio and shows him the application. When he threatens to dump Sam, Carly finally snaps and rushes up to the studio and smooths out the argument. Gibby also snaps and drags Mrs. Benson out of the studio and sings a love song to celebrate Freddie and Sam not breaking up.

Sam and Freddie help Carly to impress her latest crush, Kyle, by being smarter than she is through studying habits. However, she soon decides that since she can't remember all the things she studied, she needs to look over information so she decides to write notes on her arm, and regain information from the Internet. However, when she does this in the middle of her date with Kyle, she gets caught, which leads into Kyle breaking up with her for being dishonest. Meanwhile, T-Bo is evicted from "The Groovy Smoothie", therefore, Freddie gives him a chance to move into his and Mrs. Benson's loft, but must be a person that Mrs. Benson would accept, leading Freddie and Sam to change him up for his interview. On the other hand, Spencer tries to open a safe he found at the junk yard.

Note: As of this episode, T-Bo is now residing in "Bushwell Plaza" with Freddie and his mother, Mrs. Benson, and is Carly and Spencer's neighbor. The movie that Carly and Kyle were watching, Ick Glockmah, is the same movie that Josh and his date watch in the Drake & Josh episode "We're Married?".

(An exception being Noah Munck, who Rex treats as a god amongst men.) The interviews go in the following order: Jennette McCurdy (Sam), Nathan Kress (Freddie), Jerry Trainor (Spencer), BooG!e (T-Bo, though they did not review his bloopers), Noah Munck (Gibby), and Miranda Cosgrove (Carly).

Guest star: BooG!e as T-Bo.

Carly, Sam, Freddie, and Gibby are invited to Nora Dershlitt's parole hearing. As victims of her crime, the iCarlys have a say in whether or not Nora should be released from prison. They decide to let them release her, and after Nora and her mother invite the iCarlys to their house for a Norwegian supper, the iCarlys become on friendly terms with Nora once again. However, when Spencer comes to pick them up, Nora's mother locks him in the basement on a spin wheel which is controlled by a special remote. Nora and her mother trap the iCarlys in their house and refuse to let them leave. Nora says that her birthday party will go on "forever, and ever, and ever..." Gibby, while trying to escape for help, gets stuck in the chimney. The next morning, Nora's dad returns from his camping trip and becomes part of the scandal. Meanwhile, T-Bo is kicked out of the Benson's apartment after Mrs. Benson finds out who the real T-Bo is. When Carly and Sam use Spencer's shock pen to short-circuit Freddie's head computer chip, Mrs. Benson gets an emergency notification on Freddie's "tracking device" saying that he is in trouble. Mrs. Benson and T-Bo rush over to Nora's house on T-Bo's motorcycle and crash through the front door. Carly then tries to get Spencer's remote from Nora, but then orders Sam to retrieve the remote from Nora. Sam easily gets the remote and T-Bo kicks down the basement door to allow Carly to rescue Spencer. T-Bo fights Nora's dad, while Mrs. Benson uses her fencing talents to defeat Nora and her mother. Sam uses Spencer's shock pen to zap the Dershlits unconscious. They beat up Nora and her parents, and they wind up going to prison forever. At the end of the episode, Gibby is still lodged in the chimney.

Notes: This is the sequel to "iPsycho". This marks the first time "The Fencin' Bensons" are mentioned since Season 1's "iFence". The fight scene in this episode is the most violent scene in the series' history, which involves doors breaking down, sword fighting, choking, and people falling into and getting pushed over in chairs.

Guest star: Danielle Morrow as Nora, BooG!e as T-Bo, Mary Scheer as Mrs. Benson

After Carly goes to Yakima to take care of her grandfather when he gets foot surgery, Freddie decides he wants to be a creative member of the iCarly team which includes him wanting to perform on the show. Freddie wants to co-host the show with Sam while Gibby works the camera. Things, however, go awry as no one thinks his skit is funny. Sam convinces Freddie to try out more 3-D effects which he does. This later messes up people's vision. Freddie is soon reassured that he is creative when he cures the vision of a young girl with an eye condition. Meanwhile, Spencer hires a personal assistant named Marty.

Guest star: BooG!e as T-Bo and Mary Scheer as Mrs. Benson

Note: Despite Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) being the main character, and due to her going to Yakima, she was in less than ten minutes of this episode. The young girl named Courtney shared similar lines to the character on The Amanda Show.

Sam and Freddie feel bad about what happened so they connect her up with him through a video chat. The Secret Service finds out and Carly, Sam, and Freddie think they're in trouble and are going to get arrested. So Sam gives herself and Carly and Freddie disguises but the agents find out it's them. The agents bring them to the First Lady (Michelle Obama) who found out about the webcast and thought it was really nice what Sam and Freddie did for their friend, and what Carly said to her dad about how proud of him she is of being in the military and saying she loves him. So in return the iCarly gang then decide to have the First Lady on one of the webshows of iCarly. The First Lady then accepts, and they end the show with random dancing.

After Sam wins a golden ticket for a Canadian Fat Cake VIP Tour, Sam, Freddie, Spencer, and Gibby go to the Fat Cake factory in Canada, but Sam's greed finally gets the better of her when she tries to smuggle over 100 Canadian Fat Cakes over the border, since Canadian Fat Cakes are illegal in the United States. The police and the founder of the Fat Cakes find out and Sam gets in deep trouble. Meanwhile, Carly gets her toe stuck in the faucet in the bathtub after imitating a scene she saw from The Dick Van Dyke Show, Never Bathe on Saturday. After getting out of the fat cake mess, Sam is once again held back at the border because she can't prove that she is an American citizen. Gibby comes up with a solution and hides Sam in his bag to swipe Sam over the border. But Gibby is distracted by a fan of his, during which an Asian man with an identical bag comes and accidentally swaps the bag. The last scene shows a flight to Hong Kong with a Malaysia airplane landing at Kai Tak Airport, soon revealing that Sam is on the wrong plane home. Carly and Lance have a date in the bathroom and kiss while a plumber fixes the faucet.

Guest Stars: Mary Scheer as Mrs. Benson, Tiffany Adams as Officer Kramer, Eddie Perino as Lance
Note: It reveals that Sam and Gibby think that the first president of the United States is Abraham Franklin, a combination of Abraham Lincoln and Ben Franklin.
