"I'm a Tree" is the second single by American singer/songwriter Imani Coppola.[1] It was taken from her debut album, "Chupacabra,"[2] and samples "Soul Kitchen" by The Doors.[3]

Recording and Release

The song was recorded in 1997. Ahead of the release of "Chupacabra," a sampler was released in Europe. It included five tracks from the upcoming album, one of them being "I'm a Tree."[4] The album was later the opening track on "Chupacabra."[2] In early 1998, the track was officially released as the follow-up single to "Legend of a Cowgirl," which had entered the Top 40 in the US and the UK.[5][6][7]

Music Video

To promote the song, a music video was shot and released. It features Coppola as an office worker on an elevator, as it keeps going up. She exits on the 51st floor, and begins laying a bright yellow violin.[8] The video was played on MTV2.

Commercial Performance

The song charted in Australia; albeit poorly, at #201.[9]

Use in Media

Though the song performed poorly commercially, it was featured in several movies, including "Superstar,"[10] "Virtual Sexuality,"[11] and "Someone Like You..."[12]
