List of highest-grossing animated films

Included on the list are charts of the top box-office earners, a chart of high-grossing animated films by calendar year, a timeline showing the transition of the highest-grossing animated film record, and a chart of the highest-grossing animated film franchises and series. All charts are ranked by international theatrical box office performance where possible, excluding income derived from home video, broadcasting rights and merchandise.

Animated family films have performed consistently well at the box office, with Disney films enjoying lucrative re-releases prior to the home video era. Disney also enjoyed later success with it's Pixar brand, of which the Toy Story films, the Finding Nemo films, and Inside Out have been the best performers; beyond Pixar animation, the Shrek, Ice Age, Madagascar and Despicable Me series have met with the most success. The Peter Pan, Jungle Book, Mickey Mouse and Bambi series saw successful returns after lying dormant for decades.

DreamWorks Animation films have grossed the most, with nearly $13.8 billion across 33 films,[1] while Illumination Entertainment films have the best average with $779.3 million [2] per film across 5 films. John Lasseter is the most successful animator of all time and his films has grossed a total of $17.3 billon across 46 films while Chris Meledandri has the best average $610.9 million per film across 9 films as of December 2016.

An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of more than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture's running time.

Highest-grossing animated films

The chart below lists the highest grossing animated films. Figures are given in United States dollars (USD). Many films that were released during the 20th century do not appear on this list as figures have not been adjusted for inflation. Eighty-eight percent of the films in the top 50 were released after 2000. 2010 is the most represented year on the list, with five films. All features in the Despicable Me, Finding Nemo, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, Monsters, Inc., Rio, and Shrek franchises, as well as the main films in the Cars and Madagascar series, are in the top 50 highest-grossing animated films. While the Toy Story and Ice Age franchises feature prominently, Shrek is the most represented franchise, with five films. DreamWorks Animation and Pixar are the most represented studios, with 14 films on the list each.

The top 12 movies on this list are also among the top 50 worldwide highest-grossing films of all time. Frozen is currently the highest grossing animated film with Minions, Toy Story 3, Zootopia, and Finding Dory trailing behind. All five have grossed in excess of $1 billion worldwide. When adjusted for inflation Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would appear at the top of the chart with an adjusted gross of $1.819 billion.[3]

The films on this list have all had a theatrical run (including re-releases) since 1993. Films that have not played since then do not appear on the chart due to ticket-price inflation, population size and ticket purchasing trends not being considered.

Animated/live-action films can be considered for this list if they meet the criteria that 75% of the footage is animation and a significant number of the major characters are animated.[4]

Timeline of highest-grossing animated films

At least 7 animated films have held the record of highest-grossing animated film at different times. Four of these were Disney films and two by Pixar. Shrek 2, made by DreamWorks Animation, is the only film on the list not produced by Disney or Pixar.

Snow White held the record for the longest, with 55 years, while Aladdin held it for the shortest period of 1 year. The Lion King was the last non-CG animated film to hold the record. Shrek 2 and Toy Story 3 are the only sequels to hold the record. Finding Nemo was the first CG animated film.

All of these films are still among the highest grossing animated films, and only Snow White and Aladdin are not also among the highest-grossing films.

The top four are among the highest-grossing film franchises of all-time and, respectively, are ranked 13th, 15th,19th and 22nd of all time. The Finding Nemo has the highest per-film average, with over $983 million unadjusted and over a billion adjusted for inflation per film Finding Nemo is also the only animated franchise with every film along the Highest grossing films ever. All franchises by DreamWorks Animation, Pixar (both of whom are the most represented studio with four franchises each), Blue Sky, 20th Century Fox, Shin-Ei are on the list. 1. 1 2 3 4 Box Office Mojo stopped updating its main total for Frozen in August 2014, while it was still in release. The total listed here incorporates subsequent earnings in Japan, Nigeria, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany up to the end of 2015 but omits earnings in Turkey, Iceland, Brazil, and Australia (2016) which amount to a few hundred thousand dollars. The total is rounded to $1 million to compensate for the numerical inaccuracy.
  2. ↑ Disney issued an erratum to the gross for The Lion King, correcting its gross from $987.5 million to $968.5 million. This means that Despicable Me 2 finished its run ahead of it and would have ranked one place higher at the end of its release.
  3. ↑ Snow White earned $8.5 million in gross rental upon its initial release, in the process becoming the highest-grossing sound film. The gross rental is the distributor's share of the box-office gross and was more commonly reported than the exhibition gross up to the 1970s.
  4. ↑ It is possible Aladdin never took the record. Aladdin's release (1992–1993) coincided with a Snow White reissue, and it is possible that Snow White ended up grossing more. Snow White had grossed a total of $330 million up to 1987, and then added a further $88 million in North America from its 1987 and 1993 reissues; it is unknown how much Snow White made from these reissues outside of North America, but if the foreign gross matched or exceeded the North American gross then Snow White would have earned more.

The 2015 edition of Guinness World Records does not provide an explicit figure for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, it does state that it is one of only two pre-1955 films—the other being Gone with the Wind—that are among the adjusted top ten. It placed tenth in the 2012 edition, and the eleventh highest-grossing film according to the 2015 edition is The Exorcist, which has grossed $1.794 billion adjusted to 2014 prices. The adjusted grosses for the other films on the chart increased by 4.2 percent between 2011 and 2014 according to Guinness, and using this apparent rate of inflation would take the adjusted gross for Snow White from $1.746 billion at 2011 prices to $1.819 billion at 2014 prices.

Founded in 1972, [sic] the [Nelvana] company earned an international reputation in 1984, after American director George Lucas—best known for the Star Wars movie series—hired the studio to create two animated TV spin-off series, Ewoks and Droids. A year later, Ohio's American Greetings Corp. and Kenner Parker Toys Inc. commissioned Nelvana to produce the animated Care Bears Movie. Earning $34 million in 1985, it became at the time the world's most profitable non-Disney animated movie. Buoyed by that success, Nelvana made two sequels. But the last of the trilogy, the 1987 Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland, which Nelvana produced for just under $5 million, only broke even. Conceded Hirsh: 'It was just one [sequel] too many.'
