Helen Olivia Bicknell Whately[1] is an English Conservative Party politician. She was elected at the 2015 general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Faversham and Mid Kent, succeeding Hugh Robertson.[2]

Early life

Whately grew up in Surrey. Both her parents are doctors.[3] She was educated at Westminster School in London.[4] Whately then matriculated at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford in 1995 where she attained a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).[5] She worked in the healthcare practice of McKinsey & Company for several years prior to her election.

Political career

Whately contested the 2010 general election in the Kingston and Surbiton constituency, but lost to the Liberal Democrats candidate, Ed Davey by 13.3%.[6] She was elected as MP for Faversham and Mid Kent in the 2015 general election with 24,895 votes (54%) and a majority of 16,652.[7]

In July 2015, she was elected to sit on the Commons Health Select Committee.[8] She is also Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Mental Health and Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Healthcare.

Whately was opposed to Britain leaving the European Union prior to the 2016 referendum.[9]

In July 2016, following Theresa May's cabinet formation, she was appointed PPS to the International Trade Minister Greg Hands.

Personal life

Whately is married to Marcus and has a son and two daughters.
