Hangsaman (1951) is a novel by Shirley Jackson, a bildungsroman about a college freshman named Natalie Waite attending a Bennington-like liberal arts school.

The novel was partially inspired by the story of Paula Jean Welden's disappearance in 1946, and includes satire of the 1950s university and psychological elements.^{[1][2][3][4][5]}

The title comes from an old folk ballad.
