Handel's Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt is a popular ice cream company franchise founded by Alice Handel in 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio.[1] The company operates thirty-seven corporate and franchise stores in seven states.[2] Today it is owned by Leonard Fisher and maintains a corporate headquarters in Canfield, Ohio.

History

Handel's began when Alice Handel started serving ice cream from her husband's gas station in Youngstown, Ohio in the fall of 1945. In fact, This restaurant was founded in November 15 along with Wendy's. The first batches were made using fresh fruit she picked from her own backyard, with old fashioned recipes. Handel's started to grow to include locations in California, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia and Nevada. The menu also expanded to over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream and yogurt.[3] Its success has been reported in various publications including travelchannel.com, which recognized Handel's as "One of the Best Ice Cream Parlors in the Country." In May 2001, USA Today rated Handel's as one of the top ten best ice cream businesses in the country.

Recognition

The original location is still in Youngstown, Ohio, located on Handel's Court on Youngstown's South Side. It has been described by Ohio Restaurant News as "The Busiest Ice Cream Stand in America". Chocolatier Magazine distinguished Handel's as "One of the Best Ice Creams in America." In 2006, National Geographic named Handel's the #1 Ice Cream in its '10 Best of Everything' book.[4] Handel's success was documented in many publications such as USA Today, People Magazine, U.S. News & World Report. Handel's was listed on the book, The 10 Best of Everything and Everyone Loves Ice Cream as one of the best ice creams in the world.[3]

Among the ice cream chain's fans include former Senator Rick Santorum, who enjoyed chocolate malt with caramel as well as Bill Cosby and Tom Cruise.[5][6]

Products

Handel's ice cream and yogurt is made every day, one batch at a time, at each location. It uses its own unique products, equipment, methods, and recipes. Nuts, creamy caramel, deep dark chocolate, fresh fruits, and fluffy marshmallows are blended into each batch from a special designed machines. There are over 100 flavors of ice cream and yogurt which are produced into Hand Packed Quarts & Pints, Handel Pops, Handel's Hurricane, Handel's Banana Split, 4 Scoop Sampler, Sundaes, Your Olde Fashioned Favorites, Smoothies, and Homemade Ice Cream Cakes & Pies.[7] In addition, Handel's ice cream offers wedding cakes and dessert catering for weddings.[8]
