Hamarøy Church (Norwegian: Hamarøy kirke) is a parish church in the municipality of Hamarøy in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Presteid. The church is part of the Hamarøy parish in the Ofoten deanery in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The church was built in 1974 to replace an older church. The present church seats about 400 people and was designed by architect Nils Toft.[1][2]
History
Hamarøy church is located on an old church site. The oldest known church was built here around 1660. That church was replaced around 1770 by the "Old Hamarøy Church". In 1885, the Old Hamarøy Church was moved to Karlsøy where it still stands as the Sagfjord Church. After moving the old church to Karlsøy, a new church was built at the same site. This "new" church burned down in October 1969 after a lightning strike. The present church was completed in 1974 on this same historic church site.[3]
