GunBroker.com is an auction website based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States specializing in the sale of firearms and related items.
History
Established in 1999, GunBroker.com does not sell firearms, but facilitates transactions by bringing buyers and sellers together. Third-party sellers list items on the site, and every buyer or seller must be legally allowed to own firearms. Ownership policies and regulations are followed using licensed firearms dealers (FFLs) as transfer agents.[1] It was founded by Steven F. Urvan, who serves as the CEO and Chief Technology Officer.[2] Its Chief Operating Officer is Donald Hall.[2]
When eBay changed its policies to prohibit the auction of firearms and firearm parts (such as barrels, magazines and trigger assemblies, essentially any part involved in the firing of a gun), thousands of gun and part auctions migrated to GunBroker.com. In 2008, Hitwise, a Web site measurement service, ranked GunBroker.com third in the United States' “Shopping and Classifieds—Auctions” category, exceeded only by eBay and eBay Motors.[3]
According to the Chief Operating Officer Hall, "There has been a solid increase in the number of listings of all types of gun parts on GunBroker.com, especially in the days since the eBay announcement. We've also seen a jump in first-time visitors and buyers recently, and while I don't think the phenomenon is 100-percent attributable to eBay's withdrawal from firearms parts auctions, it certainly has had an impact."
Operations
An Inc. Top 5000[4] company, GunBroker.com is in the top 400 of all websites as rated by Quantcast.[5] It is the Web's largest hunting and sport shooting auction site. The site currently averages more than 500,000 auction listings for firearms, parts and accessories at any given time.[6]
The site attracts more than four million unique monthly visitors each month and boasts over 2.5 million registered users.[7] The site first reached $1 billion in cumulative merchandise sales 10 years after launch, and reached $2 billion in cumulative merchandise sales on November 10, 2012.[8]
Chief Executive Officer Urvan has stated, “Doubling sales in less than three years to reach the $2 billion mark is an incredible accomplishment and one that we are extremely proud of. We have made significant enhancements to the site over the past couple of years that are proving to be a catalyst for continued success.”
Mobile
In May 2014 the site announced the addition of an iOS based mobile device application for the Apple iPhone.[9] This joined the sites other mobile offerings of an Android based application and a mobile device version of the site.[10]
NASCAR sponsorship
GunBroker.com been a sponsor for various NASCAR teams since 2005. GunBroker was the primary sponsor of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Jason White,[11] driver of the #23 Truck from 2008 – 2012.[12] In 2013, GunBroker.com sponsored Joey Coulter in select Camping World Truck Series races.[13]
