Green Party of Michigan

The Green Party of Michigan is a political party in Michigan. It is the state affiliate of the Green Party of the United States (GPUS). The party has had ballot access in Michigan since November 2000, When their Presidential candidate, Ralph Nader captured 2.74% of the national vote and 2% in Michigan.[1]

In Michigan the Green Party elected a candidate to office in its first year. That candidate was JoAnne Beemon who became the first Green elected in Michigan, when on election day 2000 she received 5,349 votes (86%) to become Drain Commissioner in Charlevoix County. Beemon was credited with thwarting construction of a Wal-Mart store, by formulating storm water runoff regulations stricter than the county stormwater ordinance. She informed Wal-Mart of this on February 12, 2004. Two months later in a phone call to Beemon on April 6, 2004, Wal-Mart project manager Allen Oertel acknowledged that the company altered its plan based on information from Beemon that it did not previously know of. Wal-Mart later ended the project.[2] The Michigan party is a member of the Michigan Third Parties Coalition.[3]

Elected officials

In June 2011, there were three elected Green officeholders in Michigan.[4]

Korine Bachleda won the office of Newberg Township Clerk in 2006 as a write-in candidate, then later asked the Cass County Clerk's office to list her as a Green. She won re-election in 2008 as a Green, having been nominated by GPMI at its State Convention.[5][6]

In 2016, the Green party of Michigan saw five of their candidates get elected to office:

Douglas Campbell is a two-time Green Party Candidate[28] (2002 and 2006) for Governor of Michigan[29] and a 2008 candidate for the United States House of Representatives. In 2002 Campbell received 25,236 votes.[30] During the 2002 campaign he claimed he was beaten, arrested and jailed (in Brighton, Michigan) for attempting to participate in a gubernatorial debate from which he was excluded, at the time being the only candidate who was not either a Republican or Democrat.[31] In 2006 Campbell received 20,009 votes.[32]

Campbell, a registered professional engineer and published Atheist from Ferndale, joined the Green party upon learning of its existence in 2000,[29] and was the Wayne-Oakland-Macomb county campaign coordinator for Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader, 2000.[33] On May 19, 2007 at the Green Party of Michigan State Membership Meeting Campbell was elected to be a Delegate to Green Party National Committee.[34] On August 2, 2008 Campbell was nominated at the Oakland County Caucus to be the party's candidate for Michigan's 9th congressional district.[35]
