The Metropolitan area of Porto Alegre is the 4th most populous in Brazil, with an estimated population of 4.0 million inhabitants. Also is the 4th richest in the country with a GDP estimated at 92 billion dollars.

Its position is strategic in relation to Mercosur, being the gateway to foreigners from the Southern Cone countries and of Portugal.

Possess an enormous industrial potential and is home to some of the largest companies in Brazil, and also of many multinationals.

The airport serving the region, is the Salgado Filho International Airport. The region's cities are also linked by Trensurb.
