Gopiganj is a city and a municipal board in Sant Ravidas Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is almost at an equal distance from Allahabad and Varanasi, on national highway no 2 beside the river Ganges. Gopiganj may have derived its name from RAO GOPI SINGH BAGHEL. It is a major business centre for nearby villages and is well connected with railway and roadways.

Educational institutes present in the city include St. Thomas School (est. 1985), Kashinaresh Postgraduate college (Gyanpur), D.W. Punj Model School (Sitamarhi),swami vivekanand u.m. vidyalay gopiganj

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Gopiganj had a population of 17,938. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Gopiganj has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%. In Gopiganj, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tourism

Gopiganj is a famous market; it gets to its full glory during marriage and festive season. It has narrow lanes and by lanes selling tasty street food and daily items, giving it a ‘Chandni Chowk' look and feel. Gopiganj turns beautiful during Holi, Diwali and Eid celebrations. The 'Bharat Milap' procession is the most famous and awaited event here. There are many Temples in and around Gopiganj 'Durga Mata Temple' inside the Gopiganj bazar is one of the oldest in Town. Another famous Temple 3 km away from Gopiganj is Durga Temple,In Village Pure Bahuriya. Another famous Temple around 2 km away is 'Tileshwar nath Mandir' Dedicated to lord Shiva and is believed to be made by the Pandavas in ancient time. The temple is very famous for its Shiv-ratri Mela, which is flocked by all the villagers after taking holi dip in nearby Ganges River. Around 10 KM from Gopiganj is another famous Temple known as 'Sita Samahit Sthal' Sithamarhi. It is believed that Mata Sita entered into Earth at this very place. It is a very Serene, Clean and well maintained temple in the locality. It is located on the banks of Ganges river ads to the beauty of the place. It also has a unique 108-ft huge Lord Hanuman statue which is visible from far and is used as a landmark. There were 3 movie theaters in Gopiganj, Out of Tulsi Chitra mandir is functional from around 1980s. The other two are out of business now. Gopal Misthan Bhandar is one of modern eatery, opposite to Tulsi theater on Mirzapur Road. Root Network computer is authorized dealer of computer and its parts.

Prayag Kashi Semradh Nath Temple: Around 12 km from Gopiganj, Semradh Nath Temple is located. Its location is at centre of Prayag sangam (Allahabad) & Kashi (Vararanasi) on the banks of Ganges so this place also known as Prayag Kashi. It is very old Lord Shiv's temple and it is believed that this Shivling is naturally originated. During Savan / Shivratri this temple is very famous.

Transportation

Gopiganj is a Major transportation hub due to its location on Grand trunk road(NH2)It has a major bus station and is well connected to all nearby districts especially Allahabad and Varanasi. The railway station of Gopiganj is named ' Gyanpur Road' All Major passenger and fast trains like Pawan Express halt at this station. Now it also has a computerized ticket counter helping the commuters to get tickets of any location across India. The station has just one side and has all required amenities, Including First Aid, Eatery, Police safety, etc. Rickshaw, UPSTRC buses and Taxi's are easily available. Transportation during late night remains a problem. Gopiganj is also well connected to district Headquarters Gyanpur via Gyanpur road.
