Goose Creek High School is a public high school located just outside Goose Creek, South Carolina, United States.

Goose Creek High School offers grades 9-12. The current principal is Jimmy Huskey. The school is a public high school that was founded in 1970. Former principals include John Fulmer and Sam Brant. Their rival is Stratford High School. The school's colors are Black and Gold. The "Gator" is the mascot of Goose Creek High School.

Academics

As of 2014, Goose Creek High School has an enrollment of 1864 students. The teacher to student ratio is 16.89 students to every teacher. The school employs a total of 98 teachers. Sophomores were 88.8 percent proficient in language arts and 84.6 percent proficient in math.[1] The school is 49.97 percent female, and 50.03 percent male.[1] Goose Creek High is the only school in Berkeley County that offers the Berkeley Center for the Arts program. This program includes visual arts, creative writing, drama, dance, voice, strings, as well as wind and percussion studies.[2]

Athletics

As of 2012, sports offered at Goose Creek High include baseball, boys' basketball, girls' basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, girls' tennis, girls' volleyball, and wrestling.

State Championships

Boys' Basketball

In 2009 the varsity Boys' Basketball team won the AAAA South Carolina Boys' Basketball State Championship. The head coach of this team was Brad Dobbles who, as of 2012, is an assistant coach at Charleston Southern University.[3] in the post-season playoffs, the team defeated the following high schools: West Florence, Summerville, West Ashley, and Fort Dorchester. The team defeated Gaffney High School 63-58 in the State Championship.[4]

Girls' Basketball

In 2012 the varsity Girls' Basketball team won the AAAA South Carolina Girls' Basketball State Championship. The head coach was Tim Baldwin and, as of 2012, remains the head coach of girls' basketball. The team went 22-1 in the regular season with the lone loss coming from Redan High School from Stone Mountain, Georgia.[5] In the post-season playoffs, the team defeated West Florence HS, North Augusta HS, Hartsville HS, Dutch Fork HS, and finally beating Spring Valley HS 52-51 in the State Championship.[6] The team ended the season with an overall record of 27-1.[5]

Football

Under head coach Chuck Reedy, the 2011 Varsity Football team won the AAAA Division 2 State Championship. This was the first football state championship in school history. The team ended the regular season 10-1 and entered the playoffs as the number 1 seed.[7] The team started the playoffs by playing Lancaster High school. Goose Creek won the game 49-12 and advanced to the second round. There, the Gators beat Northwestern High school (who eliminated the Gators the previous year) 41-7. In the third round the Gators played North Augusta and beat them 49-6.[8] In the state championship the Gators faced the Greenwood Eagles. The game was played at Memorial Stadium at Clemson University and was a noon kickoff time. The Gators won the game and the state championship by a score of 37-21.[7]

School layout

Goose Creek High is constructed into eight different "wings". The eight wings include the 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 wings. Each wing consists of classrooms with wing specific room numbers. For example, room 211 is located on the 200 wing. Located in the 100 wing is the band room, guidance offices, nurse, library, and teachers service center. The school's old second cafeteria, the L.A. cafeteria, is located in between the 500 and 600 wings. The new cafeteria is located in the new 300 building. The L.A. office is located in the 500 wing. The main office was also placed temporarily on the 500 wing, now it is in the new 200 building. The school gym is its own separate building. This building includes the basketball court, weight room, locker rooms, training room, coaches offices, and equipment room. Currently, Goose Creek High is still undergoing major renovations, expected to be completed late 2016 or early 2017. Upon being finished, Goose Creek High will be a multiple story building. The 200, 300, 600 and 700 are planned to be demolished, while most of the 100 wing is planned to be renovated.
