God of War, Zhao Yun (Mandarin: 武神赵子龙; Pinyin: Wu Shen Zhao Zi Long) is a 2016 Chinese television drama starring Lin Gengxin, Im Yoon-ah, and Kim Jeong-hoon.[1] The drama is based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.[1]

Plot

Zhao Zi Long (Lin Gengxin), given name Zhao Yun, was a great military general who lived in the late Eastern Han Dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period. With unparalleled fighting skills, courage, and charisma, Zhao Yun initially served the great warlord Gong Sun Zan but switched alliances to serve Liu Bei for most of his illustrious career as a member of the famed Five Tiger Generals. But when Zhao Yun becomes embroiled in a love triangle with the beautiful Xiahou Qing Yi (Im Yoon-ah), and another great warrior, Gao Ze (Kim Jeong-hoon), will he discover that battles of the heart are the most dangerous of all?

Production

It began filming in 2014. It is confirmed to have a total of 60 episodes and is set to air on Hunan TV. Its first episode is scheduled to premiere on April 3, 2016.

The production investment for this drama is nearly 250 million yuan ($40 million).[2] The drama is featured at Hong Kong International Film and TV market (FILMART), which held from 23–26 March 2015; it is reported that the overseas copyright prices offered for the drama has soared to US$100,000 per episode, set the record for Chinese costume drama exported to overseas markets.[3] The drama is sold to Japan at US$50,000 per episode and become the best-selling Chinese drama ever imported to Japan.[4]

Reception

The reaction to the drama was overwhelmingly positive. On Chinese video streaming websites, God of War, Zhao Yun recorded 2.35 billion hits in a mere 13 days after its official release.[5] Hunan TV also reported that the drama was being viewed 260 million times daily on average.[6] In total the series garnered more than 10 billion hits.[7] The drama's first episode had a 1.73 percent viewership rating, which in Chinese standards, is considered a tremendous success. The drama peaked at more than 2% in its later episodes.[7][8]

The drama's broadcasting rights were sold to streaming site Viki with English Subtittle as well as various other cities like Chunghwa TV, Sichuan TV, Guangxi TV, Indonesia, Korea, and Japan[9][10][11][12][13]
