Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University

The Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University (GLI at CGU) [1] is an educational program that brings museum professionals, board members, academics, philanthropists and public officials together for continued professional development. GLI was created in 1979 to respond to the growing complexities faced by leaders of museums and other nonprofit institutions, is a leading source of continuing professional development for current and future museum leaders.

Previously part of the J. Paul Getty Trust, GLI is now located at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) with ongoing grant funding from the Getty Foundation. [2]

The Museum Leadership Institute (MLI) is the primary program of GLI at CGU. MLI is an “in-depth residential leadership program designed both to enhance the leadership of experienced museum executives and strengthen their institutions' capabilities,” GLI at CGU also offers other professional development programs beyond MLI, and convenes non-profit cultural leaders together to "pose, question and sometimes reframe issues of significance." [1]

GLI at CGU's website also hosts the Compleat Leader a compendium of issues, articles and opinions of interest to the busy museum leader. A variety of topics are covered, including leadership and governance; organizational behavior, values and trends.[3]

Programs

MLI: The Museum Leadership Institute An annual extensive residential program that’s goal is to further both the leaderships skills of established museum executives and strengthen institutions. “For directors and senior executives who influence policy, effect change and have a minimum of five years of challenging work experience in museums.” [4]

Taking the Helm: First Months as a Museum CEO designed to help professionals take on the position of CEO. “For those who have recently accepted or assumed a directorship in the museum field for the first time.” [5]

Museum Leaders: the Next Generation dedicated to developing the career potential of exceptional junior staff with a minimum of three years of work experience in museums. Candidates must be identified by senior executives as the field's most promising talent, individuals already responding impressively to added responsibilities. [6]
