George Allsopp (fur trader)

For other people named George Allsopp, see George Allsopp (disambiguation).

George Allsopp (c. 1733 14 April 1805) was British born and, while serving in the British Quartermaster General’s Department during the Seven Years' War, became acquainted with Canada. During that time he became one of the earliest British merchants to realize the financial potential of Canada.

Allsopp had a long and varied business career, most of it revolving around the fur trade. We know that for a period from 1766 he was a partner with Joseph Howard and others who ran a number of unlicensed posts in defiance of the rules regarding the fur trade at that time.
